In den WarenkorbLandscape folio (35 x 55 cm), [16] ff., colour lithographic title, 6 calotypes, 76 lithograph plates (some in colour) with 5 lithographic duplicates on tissue tipped in as guards for calotypes, plate 68 on a different paper, trimmed and tipped in, folded map. Title and subsequent leaf with soft crease and dust-soiled, letterpress leaves with light foxing and occasional soft crease, map with short tear, modern blue half morocco gilt, marbled sides, a very good copy. Rare photographs by Trà maux, which 'rank among the earliest endeavours to record indigenous people by photography. Trà maux complained, typically that the inhabitants of Islamic countries were not usually comfortable having their photographs taken. He persisted, however, revealing himself as one of the few early French photographers as interested in recording the people of a region as he was with its archaeological ruins' (Jacobson). Trà maux (1818-1895) travelled to Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Asia Minor in the late 1840s and began taking photographs around 1853-4, however the photographs were technically uneven, obliging him to substitute them with lithographs, however the rare images that survive have ensured the photographer's lasting reputation. The photographs are numbers 10, 28, 61, 63, 65, and 70 each (except plate 28) with lithograph duplicate. Atlas volume only; issued originally as part of the author's Voyage au Soudan oriental. Complete with 14 leaves of explanatory text and 82 plates, including tinted and color lithographs, many based on photographs. (illustrator). First edition. Large folio (36 × 52 cm). Complete with 14 leaves of explanatory text and 82 plates, including tinted and color lithographs, many based on photographs. First edition. Large folio (36 × 52 cm). In publisher's green cloth, with a large lithographed, colored title vignette on the front panel. Rare first edition of this atlas, part of Trémaux's monumental architectural survey of Africaan early attempt to integrate photography into architectural illustration. Originally issued as part of Trémaux's Voyage au Soudan oriental, this atlas represents a significant early effort to document African architecture through direct observation. Trémaux (18181895), a French architect, explorer, and Orientalist photographer, traveled extensively through North Africa and the Mediterranean, recording his findings in drawings, watercolors, and photographs. While some copies of this work contain original mounted photographs, this copy includes only lithographic reproductions. Trémaux's pioneering efforts contributed to the architectural and visual history of the region, making this one of the earliest publications to incorporate photographic documentation into illustrated travel accounts. . The map of Central and Eastern Africa, listed in the contents, is not present. Spine and rear panel renewed. Lithographed frontispiece, depicting a similar image as on the cover. First three leaves with a closed tear and denting. Some foxing, more pronounced on the initial leaves and text pages. Some leaves loose, but overall a very good copy. In publisher's green cloth, with a large lithographed, colored title vignette on the front panel.

Board portfolio. Zustand: Very good. First edition. Oblong folio (36 by 55 cm). Tinted lithographic title; letterpress title; table; 15 unnumbered leaves of plate descriptions; 82 plates, numbered 1 - 82: 7 salted paper prints from calotypes, 3 chromolithographs, 43 lithographs (tinted or monochrome; 19 after photographs; duplicate plate 53), 30 steel engravings; 1 folding steel engraved map. Additional content: "Habitation Moresque (11 a 16)" largely repeats, but modifies the preceding text plate to provide a complete description of the images in this category; lithographic proof on tissue laid in with calotype plate no. 65. A lithographic reproduction has been mounted on top of the original calotype on plate no. 28. Plates loose in recent portfolio. Two text leaves heavily darkended; most lithographic and engraved plates very good to nearly fine, with touches of faint to light foxing or marginal smudges, about one-quarter with more notable foxing (generally confined to the margins); map with light, mostly marginal foxing; calotype prints very good to nearly fine, with some minor blemishes, lithographic proof on tissue (with plate 65) nearly fine. Overall, a very good collection. Atlas comprising the second series of illustrated material which documents seven years of exploration and travel by the French architect Pierre Trémaux (1818-1895). Trained at the École des Beaux Arts, Trémaux was also a laureate of the Société de Géographie. He is best known for this epic travel series collectively titled: Voyages au Soudan oriental, dans l'Afrique septentrionale et dans l'Asie Mineure exécutés de 1847 à 1854 (Travels to Eastern Sudan, Northern Africa and Asia Minor Conducted from 1847 to 1854). In these works Trémaux describes the geology, flora and fauna, architectural monuments, and peoples of the regions. "Trémaux began his journeys around 1847 and was in Cairo by 1848 but probably did not start photographing until 1853 or 1854." Sold in installments, the Voyages was "originially intended as a monumental work with a total of 355 photographs in three series. However, the most complete set existing today includes only twenty-one photographs and fifty-six lithographs" (Perez). While Trémaux had at first hoped to illustrate his works with calotypes, the fugitive nature of the process and the fact that he did not choose a master printer to produce his salt paper prints yielded specimens that were excessively faded. "Thus, only some issues of the [Voyages series] contain original salt prints from paper negatives. In other cases the photographs have been removed or had lithographs or photolithographs pasted over them" (Jacobson). Over the approximately fifteen years in which Trémaux' publications appeared "the method of reproduction of the illustrations changed from traditional lithography from drawings, to salted paper prints from calotype negatives, to lithographs traced from original photographs to photolithography" (Vaczek & Buckland). Ample descriptive text accompanies each of the 82 plates. Along with views of buildings and ancient sites, many plates provide fine details of decorative motifs from antiquity, the middle ages, and the recent era. Subjects include the Moorish architecture of Algeria and Tunis; the mosques of Cairo, along with the tombs of the Mameluks and Caliphs; the aqueduct and cisterns of ancient Carthage and Zaghouan; Djedeida; and El-Djem, the ancient Roman city of Thysdrus. Trémaux' descriptions and sketches of Lower Nubia are considered to be especially valuable, as much of this area now is covered by Lake Nubia, the extension into Sudan of Lake Nasser, created when the Aswan High Dam was built in the 1960s. These include the ruins of the ancient city of the Kushitic Kingdom of Meroë in the desert of Naqa (Naga'a); Napata at the fourth cataract of the Nile and the region of Jebel Barkal, the main Kushite cult center of Amun in the Egyptian New Kingdom (16th-11th cent. BCE); and the pyramids of the Nubian kings at Nuri. References: Brunet V, col. 935; Goldschmidt & Naef, The Truthful Lens 171; J. First edition. Contains 2 letterpress plates (title page and half title) and 21 tinted and colored lithographs of which one is double-page (folded). In publisher's printed hard paper portfolio. [2 (letterpressed plates)] [21 (lithographed plates)]. [Complete.]. Extremely scarce, seemingly unrecorded album of 21 lithographed plates, made after some of the earliest photographic images made in Africa and its peoples. Album du Soudan comprises 21 lithographs after photographs and drawings by Pierre Trémaux and depicts a rich tapestry of views, costumes, ceremonies, zoology, and botany. The images first appeared in Trémaux's Voyages au Soudan Oriental et dans l'Afrique septentrionale, a larger work, with a collection of 56 illustrations, partly salt prints, published between 1852 and 1858. The present selection of the images was published by Henri Vivien, likely between 1890 and 1900. Based on similarities in technique, paper quality, and other factors, the collection was most likely compiled using remnants of plates from the original publication. The images, unnumbered and exquisitely rendered, besides capturing the essence of the region, from the banks of the Nile in Egypt to the forests of the Blue Nile in Soudan, show different customs and ceremonies of the local people. Architect Pierre Trémaux (18181895) was deeply intrigued by the discoveries made in Egypt during Napoleon Bonaparte's military campaign. Venturing into forbidden territories, he brought back invaluable documents, attempting to illustrate his publications with photography alongside lithography. Trémaux may not be widely recognized, but his contribution to the history of illustrated books is significant. He stands as one of the pioneers in publishing one of the earliest photographically illustrated travelogues, and he was among the first to record indigenous people by photography. Scarce. No copies recorded by RBH, neither WorldCat. 19th photography, Jacobson, K. Odalisques & Arabesques (2007), p.273 . Portfolio somewhat dusted, stained bit worn. Most of the plates are in fine condition, however some chipped, dented, or has small closed tears to the margins. Few plates stained, dusted at edges, some with foxing. Overall in very good condition. In publisher's printed hard paper portfolio First edition. Contains 2 letterpress plates (title page and half title) and 21 tinted and colored lithographs of which one is double-page (folded).
