In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. 2nd Edition. John Tregortha's scarce early 19th-century work on apparitions, supernatural occurrences and accounts of the dead, in its seemingly original contemporary calf binding. This is the Manchester: J. Gleave and Sons, 1827 edition. An attractive copy (albeit with defects noted below) with a nice…original spine, retaining much of its period character and appeal. Complete with the frontispiece and seemingly all additional plates. The text is complete and generally well preserved. A little darkening here and there but not really much at all of the normal foxing which would affect such a work. Rather, mostly age wear from reading. All illustrations seemingly present, a couple strangely have a small segment of the page missing though this doesn't impact the illustrations themselves. Note that the front board is detached but present, with the first gathering becoming loose. However the spine remains sound and attractive. Despite the front board and first pages , the binding overall is in fact very good, with no apparent danger that any of the remaining fixed pages will loosen. The rear board is fully attached albeit with some superficial surface wear/peeling. An unusual and appealing copy with two known ownership associations. To the front paste-down is a fine contemporary gilt and red morocco ownership label reading "Jonah Harris 1828", an attractive early provenance mark dating from only one year after publication. No other inscriptions/bookplates etc. Original blue ribbon still present. The book was also acquired from the private library collection of Alan Gauld (1915-2000), British parapsychologist and historian of psychical research, with original auction documentation retained. A fascinating copy combining early ownership history, original binding, and provenance from an important twentieth-century collection of psychical research material. A desirable addition for collectors of supernatural literature, ghost stories, folklore, early psychology and the history of paranormal investigation. Very nice as it is, and presumably the front board can be reattached as desired. If purchasing, do be aware of the front board being detached (but present) and loosening of initial pages. See photos, all of which are of the copy for sale, we don't use stock photos. More photos available, please just ask, likewise contact us if you have any questions. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. No Dust Jacket. New and Improved Edition. pp. 454, 164 + index [6], +[1] + Directions to the Binder [1]; 11 leaves of plates. The title to the first work continues ."Shewing their power and influence on the affairs of mankind, with several extracts and original pices from the writings of the best author…s. The whole designed to prevent infidelity, shew the states of separate spirits, and Evince the certainty of the World to Come. A new and improved edition." The first work is not dated but the second work is dated 1823, but both works were printed by J. Gleave, the second work also published by Gleave. It would appear that these two works were designed to be bound together. The directions to the Binder lists 12 plates, but only 11 are bound here - there is no evidence of a 12th ever having been bound in, with no associated browning to neighbouring pages at the point it should have been bound in. Other copies we have located have also only had 11 plates. The binding whilst contemporary is poor; the front board is missing and the leather to the spine is chipped and loose, the first couple of pages detached. It is in need of rebinding. The contents are good and complete, but some pages are well thumbed and it would appear to be a well-read copy; occasional scattered foxing more or less throughout, more pronounced to some pages; a couple of plates worn along the plate mark, one with loss to the fore-edge margin, but no affecting printed part. A few pages also chipped/torn to margins but not affecting text. A good copy in need of rebinding. Size: 8vo. Book.
