Erstausgabe
First edition. The score and story of "Le Régent de Mathématiques," a popular mid nineteenth century French song. Although undated, Worldcat states that this is a first edition from 1853. To the front cover is an unsigned caricature of a teacher instructing boys in arithmatic at a blackboard with an ABC chart behind him. The satirical illustration matches mid-19th-century French educational tropes. Lyrics by Étienne Tréfeu (18211903), a librettist known for Offenbach collaborations. Music by Victor Robillard (18271893), composer of over 500 popular songs and conductor at Théâtre du Palais-Royal. Sung by W.E. Müller. The sheet has the stamp of E Vieillot, the Parisian seller, showing that they have paid the tax on this sheet. Inside is the musical score and lyrics. This shows that Muller had a guitar accompaniment by Louis de Charlemagne. Opposite are notes and some supporting story to the song. The final page is blank. Overall in decent condition, although there is a little nicking and marking to the sheet edge. There is also a very light water stain to the top third of each page (most noticeable on the final blank page. The printing, as is common with broadsides / chapbook material, is somewhat careless, to the L of the title is printed too far to the left, and so is actually to the rear page. On sheet folded, so two leaves and four pages. Scarce, we can find no other copies available. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 1249739559. This states only one library holding at the BnF. .
