"Any documents that throw light on this neglected aspect of Baja California's history, namely the role of the Church in the peninsula from 1769-1900, deserve attention. This has been the motivation for the publication of this book. It contains three important documents which skip through the years, 1809 to c. 1865 to 1880. We are present, literally, with a sampling of the problems that faced the Church and its ministry in the peninsula, ranging from the Dominican era to diocesan status with a resident ordinary." [from the Preface by Doyce B. Nunis, Jr.] A "must have" for any collector of Baja California hilstoryi.

The only modern collection from the twelfth-century Lives of Thomas Becket in English and features all his major biographers, including many previously untranslated extracts. Providing both a valuable glimpse of the late twelfth-century world, and an insight into the minds of those who witnessed the events. By using contemporary sources, this book is the most accessible way to study this central episode in medieval history. Thomas Becket features prominently in most medieval core courses. This book allows the subject to be taught as never before, and is highly suitable as a set text." Slightl wear & tear to top edge of 8 pages (pp 61/62 - 75/76) where pages have had to be separated. Hardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. Text in Czech, English. 184 p. 48 Illustrations (4 in color). Map. Notes. Bibliography. Index. From an on-line posting: "The Diary of the Young Czech, Baron Waldstein, admirably translated and annotated, describes the tour he made in England in 1600. It describes Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Old St. Paul's (with Hatton's recent tomb the most spectacular); Whitehall, the Tower, Greenwich; Oxford and Cambridge; Theobalds, Burghley House, Holdenby; above all the Queen herself, to whom Waldstein was presented and upon whom she made the usual impression. Greatly impressed by the wealth of England, the young man thought the colleges much richer than they were, The book has been enabled to be published by a grant from Saudi Arabia. Very good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling, and some sun fading.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First edition. Octavo. xix, (1), 633, (1)pp. Index, bibliography and glossary. Text in English, Latin and Hebrew. Green buckram lettered in white with red band near top of spine. A fine, as new copy. As a result of Abraham Ibn Ezra's increasing popularity after his death, there were repeated waves of translation of collections of his Hebrew astrological treatises into Latin and into the emerging European vernaculars. A study of these versions affords us a golden opportunity to shed light on a significant missing link in our knowledge of Ibn Ezra's astrological oeuvre. The present volume offers the first critical edition, accompanied by an English translation, a commentary, and an introductory study, of three Latin texts on the astrological doctrines of elections and interrogations, written by or attributed to Abraham Ibn Ezra: the Liber electionum, the Liber interrogationum, and the Tractatus particulares. Preface (Recommendation) by Winfield Scott. . . . . . . . . Having overcome many superior forces due to a creative and daring use of tactics to divide and defeat enemy armies, Napoleon used his experience to create his maxims of war, which define his principles and strategies of command and how to optimize the effectiveness of an army. Napoleon took inspiration from generals such as Julius Caesar and Alexander the great, and had a preference for psychological warfare tactics, and the importance of surprise and initiative. Nowadays these maxims can be useful for anyone interested in leading a military or civilian team.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. xxcii, [1], 435, [3] pages. One of 300 facsimile copies of the edition published in New York in 1945. Includes Author's Preface, Translator's Preface; Memorial Notice: Mortimer Frank (1874-1919); Abbreviations of Authorities Cited; Bibliography of Dr. Mortimer Frank. Also includes Life of Johann Ludwig Choulant; Historical Introduction; Anatomic Illustrations of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages; Works on Artistic Anatomy; Description of Illustrations; and Index. Johann Ludwig Choulant (12 November 1791 - 18 July 1861) was a German physician and medical historian born in Dresden. He studied medicine at the Collegium Medico-chirurgicum in Dresden and at the University of Leipzig, followed by work in 1817 as a physician/obstetrician in Altenburg. During the same year he joined the staff at the Medizinischen Realwörterbuch of Johann Friedrich Pierer (1767-1832). In 1821 he was a physician at the Königlichen Katholischen Krankenstift in Dresden-Friedrichstadt. In 1822 he began work as a lecturer at the Königlich Chirurgisch-Medizinische Akademie (Royal Surgical-Medical Academy) in Dresden, where during the following year he became a professor of theoretical medicine. In 1828 he became a professor of practical medicine, and from 1843 to 1860 was rector of the Royal Surgical-Medical Academy. From 1844 onward, he served as medical officer in the Saxon Ministry of the Interior. In addition to his work involving the literary history of medicine, Choulant made many contributions to the Saxon Medizinalordnung (medical code). Ludwig Choulant was not only one of the greatest of medical bibliographers and historians, but was, like Haeser, Baas, and Sudhoff, an active practitioner and hygienist, the author of a work on internal medicine (1831), which passed through six editions and was translated; an authority on anthropology and craniology, and an expert in forensic medicine and medical policy, in which fields he rendered many learned and valuable reports. In this classical work Choulant traced the evolution of anatomical illustration from the early schematic plates up to his own time, including a valuable bibliography. This English edition, translated by Frank, is enriched by the chapter on anatomical illustration since Choulant, by Garrison. Reprint Edition, Strictly limited to 300 copies.
