The setting is the town of O in the plains of Russia, the time the middle of the last century. Disillusioned by his marriage to a frivolous woman, Lavretsky returns after a long absence, and in the house of his neighbours and kinsmen the Kalitins meets the beautiful Lisa, a child when he first went away. It would be difficult to point in any literature to anything more poetic or more poignant than Turgenev's story of their fateful love. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (9 Nov 1818 - 3 Sep 1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, translator and popularizer of Russian literature in the West. His first major publication, a short story collection titled A Sportsman's Sketches (1852), was a milestone of Russian realism. His novel "Fathers and Sons" (1862) is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction. While he was still in Russia in the early 1850s, Turgenev wrote several novellas (povesti in Russian): "The Diary of a Superfluous Man", "Faust", "The Lull", expressing the anxieties and hopes of Russians of his generation. Turgenev wrote on themes similar to those found in the works of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but he did not approve of the religious and moral preoccupations that his two great contemporaries brought to their artistic creation. Turgenev was closer in temperament to his friends Gustave Flaubert and Theodor Storm, the North German poet and master of the novella form, who also often dwelt on memories of the past and evoked the beauty of nature.' (Wiki) ***The William Heinemann Library Edition of Ivan Turgenev's: "A House of Gentlefolk", re-issued for libraries in 1970. A very clean ex-library copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
