The appended work 'The Oregon Territory' dated 1846 and with separate pagination. Original publisher's olive green blind patterned cloth lettered gilt at the spine and decorated at spine,( lettered 'Backwoods of Canada and Oregon).An early edition by an early Canadian author and the first bound with "An Account of the Country of the Oregon", an anonymous description of the Pacific northwest, probably by an employee of the Hudson (Charles G. Nicolay) according to Howe. The publisher apparently assumed that Ontario and Oregon were closer than they actually are and of equal interest to readers. Catharine Parr Traill was an established author before she moved with her husband to Ontario in 1832. An important source of information about early settlements and for relations between Canadians, Americans and natives. The anonymous Oregon piece includes a frontis map of Oregon, with both the Fraser and Columbia River Valleys (Oregon territory was not divided between the US and Britain until this year - 1846).Sabin 6441. Gilt page edges, lightly bumped in some places. Maroon endpapers lightly wrinkled and stained. Original green pictorial cloth on bevel boards with gilt designs stamped on the front and spine. Heavily worn around the edges and spine. The cloth is worn away on the corners and at the ends of the spine. Cloth is torn on the tail edge of the spine. Five hundred copies of the first edition of 1868 were printed by subscription, and sold for the hefty sum of $5 each. The plates, copied from Nature's Own Book by the artist, were subsequently grouped, lithographed and coloured entirely by her own hand with the aid of three daughters and two female painting school students.
