In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good +. Beautifully-produced trade catalogue from the Cascelloid "Palitoy" company, displaying a wide range of baby dolls and other toys. Several uncomfortable designs of black children (with pitch-dark skin), date this catalogue at roughly the 1930s, when the Cascelloid company was dubbed the "House of Constant Pr…ogress" by the industry press for its material innovations (with the plastics Bexoid and Plastex). One page features a celluoid model by the noted designer Mary Lucie Attwell, a doll named "Diddums." The catalogue also displays the company's offerings of animal dolls, die-cast trucks, pool toys, golf and ping-pong sets, rattles, pinwheels, and more. Needless to say, color photography was not the norm at this time, and this catalogue comprises a beautiful set of vivid and sharp photographic prints. A truly exceptional example, unlike anything we've seen: simultaneously surreal and nostalgic. Oblong 4to. album. Blue leather-covered boards. Contains 29 color photographs, all 9" by 6.5" approx., mounted on rectos (one each) of light-gray cardboard leaves. About very good plus overall. Moderate rubbing and edgewear to boards. Several pages display mild soiling and offsetting from photos. Prints just a bit yellowed, but remain sharp, vivid, and clean.

Folio (approximately 485 × 300 mm), three volumes containing 481 large samples: [44] pages with 123 lace samples (predominantly mounted on green card); [40] pages with 176 lace samples (predominantly mounted on pink card);… and [47] pages with 182 scalloped lace handkerchief samples (predominantly mounted on purple card). Cord-bound cloth covers lettered and decorated in gilt, and decorated in blind (the first two volumes), and screw-bound plain pebble-grain cloth; covers flecked, rubbed and bowed, with the extremities a little bumped and worn; minimal signs of age and use; in excellent condition. All samples in these very impressive albums come with individual reference numbers, sizes, prices and other details; the samples in the first two volumes are loosely inserted in custom-made album leaves. 'St. Gallen embroidery, sometimes known as Swiss embroidery, is embroidery from the city and the region of St. Gallen, Switzerland. The region was once the largest and most important export area for embroidery. Around 1910, its embroidery production was the largest export branch of the Swiss economy with 18 percent of the overall export value. More than 50 percent of the world production came from St. Gallen. The decline of the embroidery industry began in 1914 with the outbreak of the First World War. The demand for luxury products - and embroidery counted among these - collapsed suddenly, and also the free trade zones were disrupted. Partially neutral countries were still customers, but they could only compensate in the short term. To preserve wages somewhat from the free-fall, maximum working hours and minimum wages were now also fixed. In fact, these measures were rather counter-productive - only workers who demanded less than the minimum wage got a job. The year 1917, still in the middle of WWI, temporarily brought a surprising turn: the Entente forbade the export of cotton products to Germany, but not the export of embroidery. Therefore, every cloth to be sold to Germany was embroidered in some way, as embroidery could be sold. A year later, the sale of embroidery to Germany was forbidden, too, and this meant the end of the brief upturn. The last little flurry of exports came in 1919 after the end of the war, when the reconstruction of the war-stricken countries brought another short rise. With the start of the economic crisis, the heyday for the St. Gallen embroidery was finally ended. One sign of the extent of the crisis, is that from 1910 to 1930, the population of St. Gallen was reduced by emigration (as a result of unemployment) from 75,482 to 64,079' (Wikipedia). A cursory search online suggests Herrmann & Goldfrank went through a similar trajectory: the company Steines, Herrmann and Goldfrank first appears in 1911; from 1915 the name was Herrmann and Goldfrank; from 1919 the name was John Goldfrank and Co.; and by 1932 the company had ceased to exist. In den WarenkorbA nice piece of Edwardian trade ephemera. It would appear that W. B. Corsets were running a franchise scheme, providing suppliers with their catalogue and printing the franchisee's name on the back cover: little is to be discovered about either firm. No other copy traced. Hard to date: the corsets have an Edwardian feel, but som…e features of the illustrations may suggest a slightly later date. A 12mo stapled pamphlet, consisting of 20 pages on ten leaves of shiny paper: unnumbered front and back leaves, and pages on central eight leaves numbered 1-16. Tipped in at edge of p.1 is an adendum slip printed in red ('IMPORTANT NOTE. / Since this Booklet was issued, several of the Prices had to be increased, as follows') In fair condition, lightly aged, with slightly rusty staples. Small ink smudge at one corner of front cover, and short closed tear to edge of one leaf. The front cover carries a pastel-style head and shoulders illustration of a wistful looking young lady with short hair (clothed, no corset), tinted in red. The rest of the booklet is printed in black. The only writing on the front cover is a facsimile note beneath the illustration: 'There's a charm about W. B. Corsets'. The back cover carries the details of Davey Brothers. On the reverse of the title is a puff for 'the world-famous W. B. Corsets', and the following sixteen pages carry advertisements for the company's wares, each illustrated with a drawing of varying styles and sizes: the facing central pages each carry one full-page advertisement with large illustration for a single style, as do the rectos of the the other leaves, while the other versos each carry two advertisements, with smaller illustrations. Almost all the styles are 'W. B. Nuform', while the inside back cover carries three styles of 'W. B. Brassieres'. The illustrations present a range of poses and backgrounds, and a typical caption reads: 'W. B. Elastine-Reduso. Style 716. / New Reduso. Flat abdominal effect, with comfortable support. "Elastine" gussets over groin hold the abdomen firmly without pressure. Front supporters attached to loose "tabs," exert supporter pull from above the groin, assuring comfort and eliminating strain. Boning over abdomen shortened to ensure sitting comfort. White and Grey Coutil. Embroidery trim. Sizes 22-36 inches. Price 12/11'. See Images.

Two vignettes: the first on the…title (three boys entering an library and being handed books by an adult) and the second at the head of the Descriptive Catalogue (family at the dining table). The main body of volume (pp.1-61) consists of the Descriptive Catalogue, in small type, of 553 items. the longest description (13 lines) is of item 287, 'A Bible Dictionary, adapted for the use of Bible Classes, Sabbath Schools, and Families. 12mo. 50 and 55 cents.' No copy of this item in the British Library, on COPAC, or on WorldCat, the last of which does however have a record of an identically-titled item (no holding library listed), tentatively dated to 1854, of 38 pages and 355 books. Bond [likely the engineer and inventor George Meade Bond, ca 1853-1932, long-time chief engineer for Pratt & Whitney] to front pastedown and head of title page. A nicely produced treatise-cum-trade catalog for this major producer of industrial machinery, illustrated throughout with line engravings. An exceptionally pretty copy, appearing almost unread. ROMAINE p.203 (for the 3rd edition, 1876), "one of the best illustrated catalog-books in the field.".
