Four trade cards, each 4 ½ x 2 ¾ inches, one with Uncle Sam superimposed against a street scene featuring the company's Louisville building, "Now am I happy indeed. The South can take care of her own. The Sun Life is doing it"; the other three cards picture romanticized children plugging the company. One of the cards is back-stamped "Sun Life Ins. Landscape card, 7.5 x 11.5 cm. Designed to show off the firm's capabilities, and printed on one side in purple, green, light brown and gold, with fancy lettering within florally-decorated body and border, around a small central illustration of three men working a press. Printers' details in small letters at foot, reading 'F. Bentley & Co. Lth' and 'Shoe Lane, London.' The almanac on the reverse is a more restrained affair, stylishly printed in purple and gold. Fair: lightly-aged, with small closed hole to one corner, and slight wear at foot of almanac. Central image clear and undamaged. Harrild was uncle of the novelist Richard Jefferies. Frederick was the brother of Richard Bentley, publisher, and Samuel Bentley, printer. See Image.

The set is titled, "In Australia". The Italian set is identical to the French edition, but more uncommon. One of the most graphic sets produced by this European company which enjoyed an international market in the late 19th and early 20th century. Pictured are indigenous peoples, a kangaroo and an emu, natural scenery and an exotic plant; farming and ranching, and seaport scenes.

Ca. 1907. Color trade card showing a British Army balloon titled 'Nulli Secundus', with the dirigible in black against a deep yellow sky. Advertising card with text on the back: "Nulli Secundus was built in the Army balloon factory in Aldershot. . In 1907 it sailed to London. circling around St. Paul's . and descended in the grounds of the Crystal Palace." With further text advertising the tea. 3 x 4 1/2 ", very good.

Together a complete set of 6 coloured trade cards, each approx. 107 x 70mm., inset portraits of Chinese generals to four cards, advertising text in German to versos for Jacobi's Stickhusten-Lampe, Richard Jacobi, Elberfeld, to versos; VG. These cards depict scenes from the Chinese Revolution of 1911, which saw an end to the country's imperial dynasty, and the foundation of the Republic of China. The cards also have portraits of some of the main figures of the Revolution: "Liyuahun" (Li Yuan-Hung, first Vice President of the new Republic), Dr. Sun Yat Sen (provisional President of the Republic), "Juanschikai" (Yuan Shikai, first President of the Republic) and "Pu Ji" (Puyi, the last Emperor).

A series of 6 individual collectible cards depicting the story of an owl "husband" who stays out late & faces the wrath of his owl "wife"; with gilt borders and titles beneath each illustration reading "Well, I should screech; that Owl man is not home yet", "The house is late, what shall I say to the Owl woman?", "Been to the club have you? I'll see that you have club enough", Take a back seat will I? I'll let you know whom I'm glaring at", "It will take a pair of Gold Bracelets and a Seal Skin Sacque to repair the havoc of this unhappy night", and "Owl man and Owl woman, Owl maid and Owl bach, They are happy once more Tho' they've had many a scratch". With two further nineteenth-century trade cards: 'Alfred Callow, Pocket Book & Leather Case Manufacturer, 29 Bemerton Street, Caledonian Road - Every Description Leather Goods made to order', sometime folded, a little ink speckled on the reverse (127 x 87 mm); 'Henry Moore, Boot & Shoe Manufacturer, Gravesend', illustration of the factory on verso and calling card portion on the reverse, filled in by hand (133 x 80 mm).

Chaque page est composée autour d'un thème : enfants, jeunes filles ou garçonnets, animaux souvent personnifiés, fleurs, soldats, clowns, métiers, qualités, paysages, scènes de genre pédagogiques, thèmes bibliques, scènes coloniales, "petits nègres", quartiers de Paris.Notre album constitue un panorama intéressant du commerce bordelais : la famille Louit avait fait fortune dans le commerce de la morue au XVIIIe et avait lancé en 1825 à Bordeaux une entreprise de production et de commercialisation de chocolat à partir d'importation de fèves de cacao, et de moutarde, qui fut jusqu'au début des années 1940 une des principales entreprises du Sud Ouest. Les images publicitaires illustrent les nouvelles techniques de fidélisation de la clientèle via les enfants, issues des nouveaux grands magasins parisiens, mais aussi du développement des techniques de chromolithographies à la fin du XIXe. Elles témoignent, par les thématiques représentées, des valeurs sociales de l'époque. La couverture de l'album est usée. Trois images sont manquantes, l'emplacement sur la page ayant été découpés. Surviving traces of businesses otherwise lost to time, including 19 cards from Hong Kong advertising curio merchants, tailors, photographers, cobblers, and jewellers. The remaining 6 were issued in Weihaiwei (2), Shanghai (3), and Beijing. Though unmarked as such, these cards - with the exception of the Beijing example - were assembled by Arthur Hacker (1932-2013), a historian of China and a civil servant in Hong Kong from 1967 to 1989. Together, 25 cards (47 x 85 mm to 80 x 109 mm), including duplicate. Printed in English or in English and Chinese. Occasional pencil annotations. Marking and signs of handling, couple of closed tears: very good.
