    SECOND EDITION 1870, small 4to, 270 x 230 mm, 10½ x 9 inches, green cloth, gilt border to upper cover, composite gilt illustration (for the 4 stories) and gilt title to upper cover, gilt title and decoration to spine, 24 pages of colour plates printed by Kronheim, 6 per story each with paper guard, some with several images. 6 pages of text per story, 1st and 2nd stories in verse: Robinson Crusoe, Queer Characters (animals dressed as humans), Aesop's Fables, and Cock Sparrow (How He Kept Christmas). Head and tail of spine and corners slightly worn, lower cover with a few small stains and light damp fading to 1 corner, spine gilt slightly rubbed, neat paper repair to front inner hinge, a few pages slightly creased, a few small closed edge tears, a large closed tear to 1 guard, all repaired, 60 mm (2½") closed tear to edge of 1 colour plate, neatly repaired, virtually no loss, occasional slight fingermarks and very slight soiling. A very good sturdy copy. Queer Characters shows animals in human guise with human hands: Dobbin the Blacksmith, Tabby the Piper, Doctor Donkey's Academy, The Artful Fox (in priestly robes trapping the cocks into shutting their eyes to say grace), Towser's Trial, etc. Aesop's Fables contains 21 brief fables in large print on 6 text pages and 21 images on 6 plates, including: The Man and his Two Wives; The Lion in Love; Mercury and the Woodman; The Woman and the Wine Cask; The Blackamoor; The Trumpeter Taken Prisoner. Text and plates printed 1 side only, all plates with blank guard, each story with half-title. Head and tail of spine and corners slightly worn, hinges rubbed, a tiny split on each, small pale stain on upper cover, a few minor marks to both covers, inner paper hinges cracked but binding sound, no inscriptions, very small bookplate on front pastedown, occasional pale margin spot, small closed tear to 5 blank guards and top margin of 1 text page, neatly repaired.     Dated 1857 from British Library copy, 245 x 165 mm, 9¾ x 6½ inches, yellow printed paper wraps, red lettered, large illustration in red, black and green (papa reading to 2 children), publisher's adverts on lower cover, 8 pages printed 1 side only, the first and last pasted to the insides of the covers, as issued. Each page has a large bold amusing HAND COLOURED illustration on 3/4 of the page, below each is a 7 line verse. The story of a very small elegant man suffering unrequited love for a very large lady with a voice like a lion's roar. She puts him in a hat box, she sits on him when he tries to steal a kiss standing on a chair; he disconsolately goes walking and happens to meet a charming modest little lady who agrees to marry him. Respined in matching paper, restitched, centre page reglued expertly into covers, a few minor marks to lower cover, very small light stain to first 2 pages, small closed tear to lower margin of page 4 just entering 5 mm (¼") into image, neatly repaired, no loss, small faint water stain to same margin, a few pale fingermarks. A very good copy of an uncommon version of a delightful popular tale, first issued for children with 12 different illustrations by Benjamin Tabart in 1807. Muir sm.4to blue gilt and silver pictorial cloth (corners somewhat worn/newer cloth spine/lower cover marked) All Edges Gilt.Titlepage + contents leaf + half title to each of the stories +6pp +6pp +10pp +10pp + 24 color plates + blank guard sheets protecting the plates though there is sometimes feint offsetting of the plates onto these guard sheets - but that is partly what they are there for.The first guard has offsetting of titlepage but also on the recto feint offsetting of the plate of Eva comforting a weeping Topsy. This plate is present but is wrongly bound in at the end of the Story of Eva & Topsy. Inner hinges are strengthened, there is slight paper tanning, some, mostly marginal,tears but without loss of paper. Contains The Children's Garden + The Story of a Goat + The New Pet + The Story of Eva and Topsy which is an extract from Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe on the slave trade.     Dated from imprint circa 1855, 235 x 165 mm, 9¼ x 6½ inches, cream card covers with illustration of Aunt Mavor showing 5 children a list of fairytale titles, adverts to lower cover. 8 very good large HAND COLOURED illustrations, just over half page, small print prose text beneath, printed 1 side only. The first illustration: 7 little boys sitting on each others' shoulders so the smallest can reach the knocker on a large door. Spine expertly repaired from inside, restitched, a few pale small stains on covers, page 1 trimmed close at lower edge with partial loss of last line, still legible, last line trimmed off 2 other pages by original binder but restored neatly by him with no loss of printed text. Occasional small pencil mark to text. A very good copy, no inscriptions. Not in Osborne, Gumuchian or Oppenheimer, 1 copy on WorldCat. The lower cover lists the titles of the first 2 series, ours being No. 11 in a list of 13. Osborne Volume II page 602 is a later colour printed edition published by Routledge, Warne and Routledge in 1860 in a different series engraved by Edmund Evans.     First edition of Very's Red Riding Hood, generally considered the first shaped toy books published in North America. Presented between wrappers shaped as Red Riding Hood, Very's version retells the Grimm's story in rhyme. Duodecimo. Colour illustrations by the author throughout. Original die-cut wrappers (170 x 62 mm) depicting Red Riding Hood carrying her basket, with the wolf at her feet. With the original envelope (179 x 74 mm). Extremities very gently rubbed, a couple of small dark stains to wrappers. An excellent copy in a lightly stained and worn envelope.
