Head and tail of spine and corners slightly worn, lower cover with a few small stains and light damp fading to 1 corner, spine gilt slightly rubbed, neat paper repair to front inner hinge, a few pages slightly creased, a few small closed edge tears, a large closed tear to 1 guard, all repaired, 60 mm (2½") closed tear to edge of 1 colour plate, neatly repaired, virtually no loss, occasional slight fingermarks and very slight soiling. A very good sturdy copy. Queer Characters shows animals in human guise with human hands: Dobbin the Blacksmith, Tabby the Piper, Doctor Donkey's Academy, The Artful Fox (in priestly robes trapping the cocks into shutting their eyes to say grace), Towser's Trial, etc. Aesop's Fables contains 21 brief fables in large print on 6 text pages and 21 images on 6 plates, including: The Man and his Two Wives; The Lion in Love; Mercury and the Woodman; The Woman and the Wine Cask; The Blackamoor; The Trumpeter Taken Prisoner. Each page has a large bold amusing HAND COLOURED illustration on 3/4 of the page, below each is a 7 line verse. The story of a very small elegant man suffering unrequited love for a very large lady with a voice like a lion's roar. She puts him in a hat box, she sits on him when he tries to steal a kiss standing on a chair; he disconsolately goes walking and happens to meet a charming modest little lady who agrees to marry him. Respined in matching paper, restitched, centre page reglued expertly into covers, a few minor marks to lower cover, very small light stain to first 2 pages, small closed tear to lower margin of page 4 just entering 5 mm (¼") into image, neatly repaired, no loss, small faint water stain to same margin, a few pale fingermarks. A very good copy of an uncommon version of a delightful popular tale, first issued for children with 12 different illustrations by Benjamin Tabart in 1807. Presented between wrappers shaped as Red Riding Hood, Very's version retells the Grimm's story in rhyme. Duodecimo. Colour illustrations by the author throughout. Original die-cut wrappers (170 x 62 mm) depicting Red Riding Hood carrying her basket, with the wolf at her feet. With the original envelope (179 x 74 mm). Extremities very gently rubbed, a couple of small dark stains to wrappers. An excellent copy in a lightly stained and worn envelope.
