Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Darjeeling occupies a special place in the South Asian imaginary. With its Himalayan vistas, lush tea gardens, and brisk mountain air, Darjeeling was the consummate colonial hill-station. The romance with the 'queen of the hills' lives on, as thousands of tourists (domestic and international) annually flock to the hills to taste its world-renowned tea, soak up the colonial nostalgia, and glimpse mighty Mount Kanchenjunga. Darjeeling's fame has now gone global and its legacy continues to fuel Hollywood and Bollywood fantasies. But this is only part of Darjeeling's story. Darjeeling Reconsidered provocatively rethinks Darjeeling's legendary status in the postcolonial imagination. Mobilizing diverse disciplinary approaches from the social sciences and humanities, this definitive collection of essays sheds fresh light on the region's past and offers critical insight into the issues facing its people today. The historical analyses break with hackneyed colonial accounts to provide alternative readings of systems of governance, labour, and migration that shaped Darjeeling. The ethnographic chapters present cutting-edge accounts of dynamics that define life in 21st century Darjeeling: among them the realpolitik of subnationalism; Fair Trade tea; indigenous struggle; gendered inequality; ecological transformation; and resource scarcity. Through these eye-opening perspectives, Darjeeling Reconsidered figures Darjeeling as a vital site for South Asian and Postcolonial Studies-and calls for a timely re-examination of the legend and hard-realities of this oft-romanticized region and its people. The book seeks a place on the shelves of postcolonial theorists, on the syllabi of undergraduate and graduate courses on South Asia, and in the rucksacks of intellectually curious visitors from all over the world to Darjeeling.…

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Good. The third edition of Sara Jeannette Duncan's interesting travel work about her and Lily Lewis' experiences travelling on their own around the world, illustrated throughout. The third edition of this work. Illustrated with a frontispiece, with numerous in-text illustrations throughout. This work is a fictionalised account of the authors, Sara Jeannette Duncan, around the world trip with Lily Lewis. The two women embarked on their tour in 1888. At the time, the idea of women travelling alone was shocking and unconventional. The work is prominent for having the first description of the city of Vancouver in fiction. 'A Social Departure' was successful upon its publication, and was known for being cheerfully anecdotal, and for its wry humour, and close observation that showed Duncan's talent in journalism. Sara Jeannette Duncan was a Canadian journalist and author, who wrote for the 'Washington Post' where she was in charge of the current literature section. Lily Lewis was a journalist from Montreal. Illustrated by F. H. Townsend, a British illustrator. Townsend illustrated the second edition of 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte in 1847. With thirty-four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with some tidemarks to the tail of the boards, resulting in some discolouration. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light marks to the boards. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with some dampstains to the tail of the pages. Good. F. H. Townsend (illustrator). book.…

Ex library with ink stamp and label residue on front endpapers. Corners bumped, spine ends softened, some spots on spine. A little wear to extremities. Sara Jeannette Duncan was a well-known journalist when, in 1888, she and fellow journalist Lily Lewis shocked the world. Good heavens! Two young, unmarried women traveling around the world, without a male escort or chaperone! Duncan wrote a series of articles about her unorthodox adventures which became quite popular in the United States and Canada. Soon a British women s magazine called The Lady s Pictorial invited Duncan to publish a fictional version in serial form. That text became the basis of this, her first novel. A Social Departure's critical and commercial success made Duncan a best-selling novelist of international stature. …
