The publisher's information is also obtained from the title page of 'Strictures and Remarks'. A good set of 2 full leather hardback volumes. Leather with some bumping and scuffing. Joints rubbed, but all holding - cracked to front of volume 1, but all still bound. Spine of Vol. 2 also cracked down the centre, but all still holding. With red morocco title labels with gilt and small private library label near tail of spine. Text is clean and bright throughout, and the volumes are very readable indeed. Occasional minor flaw or light scattered usage mark, but attractively presented. Ces 3 volumes réunissent 3 titres : tout d'abord l'édition originale des "Mémoires du Baron de Tott, sur les Turcs et les Tartares". Ensuite les "Essais de Géographie", ici en seconde édition, sont l'oeuvre d'Adrien Verdy du Vernois (1738-1814), fameux pour ses manuels militaires. Enfin la rare édition originale de la "Lettre de M. de Peyssonnel" dans laquelle Claude-Charles de Peyssonnel, qui fut tour à tour consul en Crimée (1753), à La Canée (Candie, 1757) et consul-général à Smyrne (1763-1782) parle en véritable connaisseur de l'ouvrage de Tott. Chadenat parle du premier ouvrage comme d'un "ouvrage curieux contenant des renseignements très intéressants sur les moeurs des turcs" (Chadenat, 994). Diplomate et général français né près de la Ferté-sur-Jouarre, François baron de Tott (1733-1793) était le fils d'un gentilhomme hongrois réfugié en France en 1720. Capitaine dans le régiment de Bercheny (fondé par son père), il fut pris comme secrétaire par Vergennes. Revenu en France en 1763, il fit agréer au duc de Choiseul un projet par lequel le pavillon français devait être introduit dans la mer Noire au moyen d'un contrat conclu avec le khan de Tartares. Il reçut le titre de Consul en Crimée où il arriva en 1767, mais fut contraint de s'éloigner deux ans plus tard sous la pression de la Russie. Il retourna à Constantinople où il travailla activement à entretenir la lutte des Turcs contre la politique envahissante de la Russie. Le sultant s'en remit à lui du soin de réformer l'artillerie, le génie et la marine ottomane. En 1770, le baron de Tott arma la capitale et les Dardanelles et sauva l'empire en obligeant la flotte d'Orloff à rebrousser chemin. Dans les présents mémoires, "on trouva pour la première fois des notions exactes sur la politique et la vie privée des musulmans, si peu connues alors chez les Occidentaux (Larousse, GDU, XV, 328). Rare et bon ensemble (le feuillet de titre du Duvernois a été remplacé à l'époque par une copie manuscrite, sans le feuillet de faux-titre de la deuxième partie du Tott, qq. très petits frott. à la reliure, bon exemplaire par ailleurs). Tavola di nuova Projezione di celebre Autor Moderno". Interessante saggio che ripercorre la storia antica e moderna della penisola di Crimea fino alla dominazione zarista. L'autore descrive dapprima la storia e l'organizzazione politica dei popoli tartari antecedente alla dominazione ottomana, dando notizie di reperti archeologici degli antichi insediamenti degli Unni nelle zone montuose e dei porti edificati dai Genovesi fino alle più recenti edificazioni della dominazione turca. Il breve saggio continua con la relazione sulle caratteristiche e le produzioni dei popoli autoctoni. Nella conclusione, viene descritta la situazione contemporanea sotto la dominazione zarista di Caterina II. Il testo finisce con un'amara considerazione riferita ai tartari che con "Una buona amministrazione potrebbe renderli ancor più felici; ma potranno essi mai credersi tali, finchè si veggono dinnanzi agli occhi la spada de' Russi?" L'autore un nobile francese di origine ungherese, cresciuto nell'Impero ottomano e poi trasferitosi in Francia dove pubblicò le sue memorie in quattro volumi da cui questa traduzione italiana probabilmente è tratta. Esemplare marginoso, piccola firmetta al frontespizio, ottime condizioni complessive delle carte e della bella carta geografica. Molto buono.

A huge success at the time of publication, this eyewitness account fed the public?s insatiable fascination with the ?Oriental other? and challenged the insouciance of Western government. The memoirs follow the Turkish state?s metamorphosis from an agrarian society to a military power, a transformation overseen by Tott, who was highly involved in these military reforms. A military engineer as well as a diplomat, Tott began writing his memoirs in 1767, the year he became the French consul to the Crimean Tatar Khan. Tott was the most influential of the many self-appointed Western ?cultural mediators? that flooded to Istanbul as part of the clan interventionniste in the late eighteenth century. Many Europeans acted as agents or double agents during the conflict, Tott included. His explicit mission was to relay information on the French Trading posts, whilst in secret his task was to encourage the Ottomans to go to war with Russia over Poland. It is clear that Tott felt a sympathy towards the Ottomans, so much so that Voltaire described him as the ?protector of Moustapha and the Koran? Nonetheless, Tott was popular among the French as his memoirs were both informative and very entertaining. He had initally travelled east to defend the Dardanelles but he remained to teach the Ottomans how to use artillery and his involvement was crucial in the country?s militarisation. A nineteenth century biographer, J.C.F Hoefer credits him with ?dispelling with exactitude, and often with impartiality, the European Myths of the Ottoman empire? These memoirs were the first eye witness account to be published on the Ottomans, and the conflict over ideology and governance that Tott explores was not only fascinating to the French populus, but also contradictory to the staunch ?studied ignorance? of European government. At the time, William Pitt the Younger remained seemingly unbothered by the events of the Ottoman empire despite the despotism that had enveloped it, mainly because of the decline in the Levant trade and the pro-Russian party that resided there. ?Tott abhorred what he described as the stupidity and cupidity of the Ottoman officer corps, and was contemputous of the quality of the rank and file. Tott?s Memoirs were a phenomenal success partly because such adventures suited the tasetes of a rapidly expanding reading public in Europe. They cap a century of fictional fascination with the East?
