In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. This book serves as Japanese contemporary photographer Toshio Shibata's first Western monograph, capturing the stark aesthetic conflict between civil engineering structures—like concrete grids, dams, and roadside walls—and the natural mountain terrain of rural Japan. Due to a limited run of a thousand copies, this has become a highly sought after collector's item. …

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 350 copies, signed by the artist on a label tipped in to the back cover, and numbered on the colophon page. Hardcover. Silk cloth-covered boards; with photographically illustrated dust jacket and silk cloth-covered slipcase. 48 pp., with 41 duotone plates. 15 x 12 inches. New in publisher's packaging. From the publisher: "'The end of the 1970s saw the completion of Japan's postwar construction, as well as a withering of the student movement and the various terrorist acts that had shaken the global community. The early 1980s was a brief interlude of calm, anticipating the end of the long Showa era, before Japan was deluged by the bubble economy. I had just returned to Japan in 1980, after studying for four years in Flanders where time moves slowly, and the atmosphere is very relaxed. In addition to the rapidly advancing westernization, the reality of this new Tokyo, where old pre-war Showa is blended with modern Showa (post-war), looked disorderly and chaotic to me, and it was not easy to capture it visually. I struggled to realize my own mode of expression in this home country of mine, and began by chasing lights of the night-time to deflect this chaos.'--Toshio Shibata, from the Afterword Born in Japan in 1949, Toshio Shibata entered the painting department of the University of Arts of Tokyo in 1968. He later decided to continue his studies in Europe at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Gant (Belgium) where he turned to photography. It was upon his return to Japan in 1980 that he made the haunting, nighttime photographs of Tokyo presented here for the first time. Toshio Shibata's work is included in the permanent collections of museums around the world, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Victoria and Albert Museum; London; Bibliothèque National, Paris; Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art; and The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Yodakais Toshio Shibata's seventh [Nazraeli Press] monograph." NOTE: A SPECIAL EDITION (WITH ONE PRINT) IS ALSO AVAILABLE. Signed by Author.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. 1996/2000. First edition, second printing. Signed in black ink on the title page by Shibata. Hardcover. Fine dark olive green linen cloth, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Toshio Shibata. Text by Anne W. Tucker and Etsuro Ishihara. Includes a biography and notes to the plates. 96 pp. with 40 duotone plates, beautifully printed on heavy fine paper by Sellier Druck GmbH, Freising, from separations made by LanaRepro, Lana, Italy. 12-3/4 x 12-3/4 inches. This second printing was limited to 1000 copies. New in publisher's shrink-wrap (from the publisher's archive; open for signature). From the publisher: "In its interior, Japan is mountainous and green. Most of the population still lives along its coasts, but as people slowly move inland, mountainsides are torn away to create necessary horizontal space. To secure the newly exposed inclines, concrete is sprayed and poured onto the vertical plains, or hoisted as pre-poured grids onto the hillsides. Since 1983, Toshio Shibata has photographed these sites. His elaborate compositions and exquisite black and white prints are works of art that record the merging -- and resulting tension -- of Japan's great natural beauty and the craftsmanship of its engineers. Landscape presents a selection of forty-three photographs from this project, with essays by Anne Tucker and Etsuro Ishihara. This second printing of Landscape is limited to 1,000 copies." Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No dust jacket as issued. 1st Edition. First edition, first and only printing. Special limited edition of 500 hand-numbered copies, with an 9-5/8 by 7-5/8 inch original gelatin silver print tipped in debossed front cover, no dust jacket as issued. The book is hand-numbered and signed in black ink on the colophon page by Shibata, and enclosed in a gray cloth slipcase. Hardcover. Fine dark green linen cloth with title stamped in gray on front cover and spine, no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Toshio Shibata. 36 pp. (including one 2-page gatefold), with 18 duotone plates beautifully printed on heavy paper by Oceanic Graphic Productions, China. 16-3/4 x 13-1/2 inches. Out of print (sold out shortly after publication). Scarce. New in publisher's shrink-wrap (slit open for signature). From the publisher: "Toshio Shibata is well known for his large-format landscape photographs, particularly those made in Japan. Shibata's photographs of mountainsides overlaid by concrete "netting" and other engineering devices to prevent erosion and landslides are marked by their abstract beauty and sense of immense scale. Our first book on this work, Landscape, was published to wide critical acclaim, and the first printing sold out upon publication. The artist's follow-up book, Dam, is perhaps more beautiful yet. Printed in a large 14 x 17 inch format, and hardbound in Japanese cloth, Dam is limited to an edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Each copy of the book features an original print on the front cover, protected by a matching slipcase. Shibata's work has been widely exhibited and published throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. It has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris. Toshio Shibata's photographs are included in major public and private collections throughout the world; we are pleased to make it available in this limited edition book. Early orders are encouraged." Prima edizione di 350 esemplari numerati e firmati dall'Autore (First edition of 350 numbered and signed copies). .
