The object of the editor of this book is to present a complete summary of mythology, in a chaste diction, for the study of persons of every age, and of either sex. Without a general knowledge of heathen mythology, the immortal writings of Homer, Virgil, Ovid and others, are almost intelligible and their principal beauties lost.

Verlag: Printed for J. F. and C. Rivington., 1787
Couverture rigide. Printed for J. F. and C. Rivington. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Certainly erroneous mention of 28th edition, the 1824 edition itself being noted as 25th. Illustrated with 28 out-of-text plates in the taste of the late 18th century, unsigned. The first edition and the following ones contained only 7 figures. The first edition of this work seems to date from 1694. Contemporary full marbled calf binding. Smooth spine decorated with 5 fleurons and frame roulettes. Red morocco title label. Upper headcap partly missing, same for the tail headcap. 2 corners bumped. Rubbing. Crack at head to upper joint. This book by Pomey, 17th century author, was translated by Andrew Tooke. It contains an index of names of all the deities of mythology. The reading is interesting in more ways than one, Pomey explaining the meaning of mythological allegories; we thus learn that Bacchus would be Moses. The plates represent the Gods and deities, accompanied by medals. NB: This work is available at the bookshop on request within 48 hours. *.
