Zuckerrohr ist in Indien zwar seit mehr als 2000 Jahren bekannt, aber es war niemals preiswert. Der Preis fUr ein Pfund Zuckerrohr entsprach dem Preis fUr einen gut en Liter Rotwein! Mittlerweile ist der Zuckerverbrauch stark angestiegen und der jahrliche Zuckerverbrauch in GroBbritannien mit etwa 40 kg pro Kopf nimmt im weltweiten Vergleich einen Spitzenplatz ein. Der jahrliche welt weite Durchschnittsverbrauch pro Kopf liegt bei etwa 20 kg, in China sogar nur bei etwa 7 kg pro Person (was allerdings nicht mit der geringen Nach frage zusammenhiingt). Der Geschmack von Rohrzucker ist beim Verbraucher offensichtlich sehr beliebt und er ist einer der wenigen chemischen Stoffe, die in groBen an den Kaufer abgegeben werden. In den letzten Jahren ging Mengen direkt der Trend bei den privaten Kiiufen dahin, daB in immer geringerem Umfang unverarbeitete Nahrungsrohstoffe (z. B. Mehl) gekauft wurden und dafUr in immer groBerem AusmaB Fertigprodukte.…
