Description of several Southern textile strikes in 1929, all with violence and severe anti-union measures by employers. The methods of the communist-affiliated National Textile Workers Union, which led the strike in Gastonia, NC, are compared with those of AFL United Textile Workers, which led the other major strikes.

Good condition. Binding is strong and corners are square. The cloth is overall toned, with spots f discoloration to the spine and a faint coffee ring to the front cover, but free of rubbing or other wear. Pages are tight and clean. Previous owner's name stamped at the head of the front attached end paper, in red ink, along with the number "25" written in blue pencil. Pages are evenly toned throughout, but otherwise free of marks or writing. Some light scratches to the page edges at the head. Overall good condition. Tippett's first novel, written on a Guggenheim Fellowship, telling the story of John Stafford, "who leaves England in the 1870's with his young bride Ellen to work in the Wantling coal mine in Illinois. Tippett tells, in great detail, of the severe life of the nineteenth century miner -- long hours of work, accidents, wage cuts.John becomes active in the union movement and is soon recognized as a leader.
