It traces both prominent workshops and lesser-known provincial makers, situating them within broader developments in industrial production and the bookbinding trade. Supplementary material includes appendices on tool shapes and typologies, smoke proofs, major public and private collections, lineage charts of toolmaking firms, and a list of known pre-1845 toolmakers. The volume is further supported by three separate indices, enhancing its utility as a reference tool. Foreword by Marianne Tidcombe.
