First Review (8vo, 7 pp) with slight wear at head (not affecting text) of first four leaves; last three leaves on House of Commons letterheads. With corrections. The subject is Daphne Fielding's 'The Rainbow Picnic' (1974). Second Review (8vo, 7 pp, on House of Commons letterheads) of four books about crossword puzzles, including Roger Millington's 'The Strange World of the Crossword' (1974). With corrections. An interesting and informed review (at this time Driberg was compiling the 'Tiresias' crossword for Private Eye magazine). '[.] Delegates to Labour Party conferences in the '50s were sometimes flattered to observe the late Lord Attlee, head bent, making careful notes of the main points of their brilliant speeches: in fact, he was surreptitiously filling in the Times crossword. 14pp., 12mo. In ruled notebook bound in black cloth. Titled 'Tom - School' at head of first page, with small section cut away from the front cover to make this visible. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper, with one slightly dogeared corner and light staining to blank leaves at the rear. Written while Driberg was between the ages of five and thirteen, and with the handwriting more untidy towards the end. Of interest not only for the information it gives regarding Driberg's childhood, but also for the light it casts on the education of middle-class English boys in the period immediately preceding the Great War. The first three entries read: '1910. | Sept. 27th. Tom has been going daily to Lady Osborn's from 16 July for some simple lessons with Dorothy Osborn under Miss Wright the Governess. The Osborns leave Crowborough tomorrow so Tom went for the last time today | Sept 27 Wrote to Miss Hooker that Tom wd go to their Kindergarten school from Monday 3 Oct | Oct 3. Baly went for first time today to Miss Hookers. I left him - they brought him back.' The fifth page is headed '1913 | Tom goes to the Grange on the 22nd. April. To-day sent the following admission paper - [.]'. The eleventh page begins: '1917 | After missing last term on acct of appendicitis Tom returned to School on Saturday 27th Jany'. The last entry (30 July 1918) concludes: 'Recd acct today from Mr Frank with report &c & sent him cheque for £10. 3. 2'. Accompanying the journal is a map, in an unknown hand, drawn in pencil and ink, of towns between Portsmouth and Shoreham on the English south coast .…

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Both in fair condition, worn and aged. The first item with one fold. Both signed 'Edwin Waugh' and addressed to 'Mr. J. T. Baron'. ONE (14 February 1889): 2pp, 12mo. On the rectos of a bifolium. He would have answered Baron sooner, had he not been 'tossing to and fro a good deal lately'. He thanks him 'very heartily for the kind feeling expressed in your lines addressed to me on the 73rd [the 3 underlined three times] anniversary of my birth, in the Blackburn Times'. He finds it 'a cheering thing', at his time of life, 'to feel that I have the friendship and good wishes of so many of the people of my native county'. He ends by reiterating his thanks for his 'personal kindness, and friendly tribute'. TWO (24 February 1889): 1p, 12mo. He read Baron's 'lines on "Art and Song" with great pleasure', and thinks he 'ought to do more of the same kind'. He ends by stating that he is enclosing a copy of his 'latest photograph' (not present).…

8pp., 4to. On eight leaves pinned together. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with rust staining from pin. Apparently unpublished. Typed at head of first page: 'From J. H. Driberg, 19, Dryden Chambers, W.1.', above which, in manuscript: 'NL. N. 10 pt Miscellany'. Driberg is clearly the author: 'Anyanga' is a surname common in the area of Kenya in which he was based as a colonial offical. The first paragraph gives an indication of the tone of the piece: 'The War left me with one fragrant memory. Her name was Yvonne Beaubouchais, and the date was 1915. I was held up in Maiseille, [sic] surely the most romantic town in Europe, with an atmosphere all of its own. East meets West here much more than in Suez, or so it always seems to me. Suez is too Eastern and yet not Eastern at all: it is altogether too meretricious, too much the courtesan laying herself out to allure the jaded Westerner. But Marseille is alive and not at all self-conscious. Every race and creed meets on an equality: Spahis jostle against Greeks: Levantines and Libyans, French, Italians and Indians drink harmoniously at the same cafes: Malays and Malagash, Turks and Syrians are equally at home, and even the English become less Anglic and Americans less nasal. There is a camaraderie about the place which takes no account of East or West: kardamom and garlic, betel and saffron, blend in a delightful harmony of the senses such as no other town possesses.' He finds Yvonne Beaubouchais 'something different': 'It may have been a certain air of aloofness, a kind of meditative remoteness which seemed in that atmosphere singularly attractive. [.] She was not beautiful, though definitely attractive, but it was her voice which made me catch my breath with astonishment. It was the most musical voice I have ever heard, not too high and not too low, and even in ordering of a creme-de-menthe it had a quality of enchantment in it such as would turn the head of an experienced man: and I was only a boy then. [.] it was on the third day, I think - suddenly Yvonne made a suggestion which, uttered in the most natural and conversational way, made me draw a deep breath of amazement. [.] I was certainly confused by her proposal that in order to cement the entente (yes, that was the reason expressly stated) I should become the father of her child. [.] she had discussed the matter with her fiance, and they both agreed that it would be a magnificent thing for the Entente to be cemented in this way: it would be a mascot or a symbol or whatever you like to call it ensuring the success of the allied armies. The account does not appear to have been published, and indeed could not have been published during wartime. It may be that it was written for an editor at the Daily Express, but the extent of revision and emendation suggests that it was written with an eye to publication after the war. The first page, numbered 4, begins, after an eight-line deleted passage: 'Reynold's second-in-command is Major Mc.Cormack, a whimsical, helpful little Northern Irishman with strong Evangelical views. He & the four Chief Press Officers, handled me amiably enough; none individually seems responsible for the rows & inconveniences which occur daily. Then there are the Conducting Officers - hearty, convivial cavalrymen who wouldn't profess to know much about any periodical but the Field & Country Life. One of them said to me the other night, "Hickey . . . . ? Oh yes, I've read your stuff. You do cats in the Sunday Times, don't you?" Research established that he was referring to Nat Gubbins in the Sunday Express. Some of the reporters find this Bullingdon manner a little overwhelming; others say that they are useful on the job, since they are on Christian-name terms with the OC of every unit visited.' At the foot of the first page he begins his description of how 'The King's visit brought the rows & inconveniences to a climax. | To begin with, elaborate arrangements had been made to keep all news of it secret till after he had returned to England. On the day the King sailed for France, it was decided in London to release the news at once, after all. But the first that PR in France knew of this decision was hours after the King's arrival, when someone happened to be listening in & heard the news on the BBC.' | Then the censorship fell into its most jittery mood. We were allowed to say that the news had been left secret till the King's arrival (which was obvious). We were not allowed to say that the release came as a surprise to us in France: any hint that deprartmental co-ordination is not 100% perfect is regarded (wrongly, I think) as dangerous. | We were not allowed to quote even such amusing details as the pseudonyms by which, for secrecy, the King had been spoken of beforehand: even among ourselves we had to day "When Mr Harris arrives . . ."; some of the PR staff called him "Mr Big."' He addresses the reader: 'You have heard already of the curious fool arrangement by which glimpses of the King were rationed among the reporters.' He explains that the official description of the 'conference on the day the King lunched with Lebrun & Daladier' was 'not even accurate. There had been no exchange of toasts. There had been only one toast: the King, as host, had drunk the President of the Republic's health. The reporter put this in his story; found later, to his fury, that a censor had struck it out, writing in instead the smug "Cordial toasts were exchanged".' He discusses the role of the censors. The last page (numbered 9) concludes: 'Our reporters are annoyed by all this nonsense & tiresomeness; but its effect on the Americans is likely to be serious. [.] Red tape presented at least one glowingly pro-British news-agency story of the King's visit from appearing in 1,500 newspapers, mostly in America. The agency man was away that day.
