Published Boston, 1904, in the publisher's original burgundy-red cloth boards with gilt top edge, wide deckle-edged fore and bottom edges, and the titled spine paper label as issued. Pages are exceptionally bright, clean, and unmarked, with generous margins and many leaves remain UNOPENED?suggesting the volume has been scarcely handled since publication. Frontispiece with intact tissue guard; six photogravure plates present and crisp. Light wear to crown of spine; spine panel mildly sunned with faded title block, as typical for this series. Binding very tight and sound. Endpapers clean. A superior example, grading Very Good to Very Good+. Collector's Note: The Dana Estes Edition de Luxe of Tolstoy remains one of the most desirable early English-language presentations of his work, prized for its heavy paper, photogravure plates, and deckle edges. A collection of five essays on miscellaneous subjects - "The Relations Between the Sexes", "Alcohol and Tobacco", "Drunkenness Amongst the Governing Classes", "Labour" and "Church and State". The translator's preface is initialled "W.M.T." - William M. Thomson, who also translated other works by the author published by Temple. The translation is apparently of dubious quality but this small volume in the "After Dinner Series" is uncommon, certainly so institutionally with only a small handful traced in libraries around the world.

Bookplate and stamps of St Luke's Hospital School of Nursing Library, Bethlehem, PA, to front pastedown of each volume, with corresponding borrowings slips etc. to rear endpapers. Stamp to title page, and blue ink dedication inscription to introduction of each volume, otherwise internally clean. Light general wear to cloth. Very good. First published in 1898, and described by Dole as the first properly complete edition of Tolstoy in English, including several revised translations making far greater use of the original Russian.

[Literature] ISSUED AS VIZETELLY'S THIRD EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13 x 8 cm) pp.429; 360; 387. Publisher's original brown boards, decoratively blocked in red and black, with individual book titled printed on each cover, plain brown linen spines, coated yellow endpapers. Same ink ownership to each volume (date 1919), some shelfwear, corners rubbed, spine tips chipped/worn. Vizetelly first pirated the 1886 Gottsberger/Harpers edition (translated by Bell from the 1884 second French edition) of 'War and Peace' in the autumn of that year. Later editions followed in 1887 and 1888. Following Vizetelly's imprisonment for obscene libel, his son reissued the second and third editions from new premises in Henrietta Street, which can be regarded as either the third edition second state, or the fifth or sixth Vizetely editions overall. No early Vizetelly edition is recorded sold at auction in the publisher's card binding. This is a rare opportunity to obtain just such a copy!
