In den WarenkorbA travelogue by Jacobus Tollius (1633-1696), a Dutch classicist; edited and annotated by Henricus Christianus Henninius, a successor of Jacobus Tollius as professor in history at Duisburg. In six chapters ("epistles") the author describes his journey to Brandenburg (Berlin), Bohemia (Prague), Austria (Vienna) and Hungary (Buda a…nd other cities, including Slovak ones). A complete copy, no page or plate is missing. The book features an engraved title page, two illustrations (copper engravings) in the text and 16 unnumbered plates with copper engravings (besides antiquities and inscriptions, plates depict beautiful vistas of Visegrad, Györ, Komarom, Obuda, Buda (twice) and Esztergom. The engraved title page was made Jan van Vianen (ca. 1660 - ca. 1726) after a template by Jan Goeree (1670-1731); two vignettes ("headpieces"; copper engravings) were made by Jacobus Baptist (d. 1704) after templates by Jan Goeree. The vista of Esztergom was made by Jan van Vianen; other plates are either unsigned or, in one case, made by an unidentified author. The second title page features printer's device (copper engraving); other pages are decorated with numerous initials and tailpieces (mostly simple woodcuts; two initials are identical copper engravings). /// Leather binding with raised bands, gilt ornament and coloured edges; hardback, [18]+260+[14] pp., 16 plates, 8° (17.5 x 24 cm), leather worn and chipped, with a few bookworm traces, corners bumped and rubbed, free endpapers worn and tanned, with chips and tears, engraved title yellowed, with two water stains, ca. 40 leaves and plates have waterstained corners (see photo of title page), other signs of wear and age are quite rare (brown spots, minor tanning, minor marking), spine slightly cracked, condition: good Book Language/s: Latin.
