Kyoto 1852, Noda Tsuryua, Maruya. Large Kawara Ban [a broad- side] woodblock print, sheet: ca. 4 x 34 cm., print: 44 x 28 cm., very good, contemporary re-backing mending a few old tiny worm holes, now solid & firm. mild center fold. OBSCURE . *** **** *** . . AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF A SHINTO SHRINE ADVERTISEMENT . . . EPHEMERAL WOODBLOCK PRINT, SELDOM FOUND EXAMPLE . * This print shows the Kitano Ten Man temple, memorial celebration, held every 50 years after Michizane's death. The memorial service is called 'Daimantosai' and is held, and every 25 years in between, then another memorial service called 'Hanmantosai' is also held. . We can see the throngs of respectful visitors, visiting the shrine showing loyalty and fidelity to Sugawara no Michizane. . The print is an advertisement for the memorial service to be held in February until the 25, 1852. . This kind of ephemeral advertising poster [Kawara Ban] had a very short life-span. Tacked to public places, fences, posts around the temple and adjacent towns, these were not expected to last very long. Most all suffered the fate of winds, rain, snow and seldom if ever lasted. . This example was nicely preserved in a book of the period with other advert examples, all of which were, kept clean, fresh and protected. These seldom lasted more than a week or so at most when publically posted. . *** . Color photos are posted to our website. . *** RARITY: This preserved example is still in excellent condition, with contemporary neat re-backing. This kind of advertisement is almost never found in any condition. . *** CONDITION: . The print is an original publication of Kaei 5th year [1852], The print is in black outline, with excellent registry & impression. . There was an old tear from bottom edge up ca. 12 cm., which was mended when the print was re-backed. . Else there are a few old minor tiny old worm holes, all of which were restored when re-backed. The print is firm, solid and stable, . The print has a mild center fold. When folded down it is ca. 45 x 24 cm., which is a 'double-Oban' size. . *.…
