The Rose and the Ring; or, The History of Prince Giglio and Prince Bulbo. A Fire-Side Pantomime for Great and Small Children. London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1855. FIRST EDITION. Illustrated with eight full-page wood engravings, including the frontispiece, together with a vignette title page and numerous illustrations in the text, after drawings by the author. Small octavo, iv, 128, 16 pp., publisher's catalogue advertising: The Rose and the Ring, and the third edition of The Kickleburys on the Rhine. Housed in a folding chemise with ribbon pull and a red morocco and cloth slipcase. The case spine has five raised bands, gilt lettering and decoration, and "London, 1855" at the foot. The Rose and the Ring is the last of Thackeray's Christmas books, written and illustrated by the author and published under his pseudonym, Mr. M. A. Titmarsh; it was published for Christmas 1854 with an 1855 title-page date. The story developed from Twelfth-Night character drawings made to entertain children in Rome. "A fire-side pantomime for great and small children." A satirical fairy tale of rival princes, disputed thrones, and romantic misunderstandings, it follows Princes Giglio and Bulbo through adventures involving Fairy Blackstick and a magical rose and ring that make their possessors irresistibly attractive. Beneath the comedy lies a satire on vanity, social rank, and appearances. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with spotting and light foxing. Binding is sound and square. Original boards moderately to heavily rubbed and worn, particularly at the extremities and corners. Chemise and slipcase in Very Good condition. A Good First Edition in the original pictorial boards.
