Publisher's quarter vellum with elaborate gilt titles and decoration to spine, and grey paper-covered boards titled to upper. William Mitcheson Timlin was born in Northumberland, England, and studied art in Newcastle before following his parents to South Africa, where he completed his studies in art and architecture. He then practised as an architect, designing a number of major public buildings in Kimberley. At the same time he worked as an artist, producing paintings, etchings and pastels of conventional subjects, in addition to the watercolour fantasies for which is he best known. He also wrote stories and music, and did periodical illustrations. In 1923 he published 'The Ship that Sailed to Mars', which has become a fantasy classic.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing. Original grey paper covered boards with gilt titles and decorations to the spine and black titles to the upper board. No dustwrapper. With 48 colour illustration plates and calligraphic text both mounted on dark grey card throughout. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the spine a little… darkened and the paper cracked and frayed to a few spots on the board corners and edges. The contents, with offsetting to the endpaper and some toning and occasional chipping to the page edges (not effecting the illustration or text plates), are otherwise bright and clean throughout and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. William M. Timlin (1892 1943) was born in Northumberland but spent most of his life in South Africa. Timlin was a highly skilled writer and illustrator and also earned a living as an architect, and his aptitude in that field are clear to see in the beautiful, detailed, fantasy buildings that are abound in this title. The Ship that Sailed to Mars is a wonderfully whimsical blend of science fiction and fantasy, the profusely illustrated interstellar adventure taking the reader to planets full of pirates, fairies, and dragons. Upon receiving the hand lettered manuscript, George Harrap liked it so much that they decided to publish it as it was instead of using typed text. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. All items are catalogued by humans. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

In den WarenkorbWith new introduction by John Howe. Large quarto. With 96 leaves comprising 48 calligraphic text leaves and 48 colour plates, as original, but printed onto a spring green background rather than grey art paper. Quarter white cloth spine, grey paper-covered boards, titles and decoration in black to spine with black titles to upper… board. Marbled grey-green endpapers. A near fine copy. Inimitably written and illustrated by Ashington born architect and artist William Mitcheson Timlim "The Ship That Sailed to Mars" is his only published children's book. As well as designing important buildings in the South African Kimberley district, Timlin worked as the artist on numerous travel books but "The Ship That Sailed to Mars" is recognised as his masterpiece and a fantasy classic. Originally written for his son, the beautifully illustrated tale has been described as the most original and beautiful children's book of the 1920s, while Alan Horne states that it puts Timlin in the top ten fantasy illustrators along with Rackham and Dulac. This 2011 facsimile features a new introduction from John Howe providing an overview of Timlim's life and history. Heavyweight, so an additional postage contribution may be requested for shipping to overseas addresses. Horne, Alan The Dictionary of 20th Century Book Illustrators p. 413.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition. Timlin's only book, this mix of science fiction and fairy tale is a "masterpiece. His watercolours equal the best work of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson" (Dalby, p. 102). In 1921, Timlin (1892-1943), a British architect working in South Africa, began to write The Ship that Sailed to Mars as a project to dist…ract his young son. The task became an increasingly ambitious endeavour, and, after two years of work, Timlin sent it to George Harrap. The publishers decided to produce it in a lavish edition of 2,000 copies. Of these, 250 were sent to the US and published simultaneously. Timlin also contributed illustrations to various periodicals and travel books. Richard Dalby, The Golden Age of Children's Book Illustration, 1991. Quarto. With 48 mounted colour plates, 48 mounted pages of calligraphic letterpress, title page and letterpress printed in blue, black, and green, all on heavy grey art paper. Original quarter parchment, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, grey board sides lettered in grey on front. Christmas gift inscription dated 1923 to front free endpaper. Light rubbing and wear to edges, a little soiling to covers, endpapers browned, occasional foxing. A very good copy.
