Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. TIMBS, John (1801-1875), editor. The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction. Volume XXI. January-June 1833. London: J. Limbird, 1833. Original semiannual volume collecting the weekly issues published from January through June 1833. Octavo (8vo), viii, 440 pp, with an index to the text and a separate index listing 91 engravings. Contemporary printed paper-covered boards; deckled edges. Illustrated throughout with engraved views, portraits, architectural subjects, antiquities, and natural-history subjects. Founded by John Limbird in 1822 as a twopenny illustrated weekly, The Mirror became one of England's earliest mass-circulation illustrated magazines and an important vehicle for bringing literature, history, biography, science, architecture, antiquarian subjects, and current affairs to a broad readership. This volume appeared during John Timbs's editorship, which extended from 1827 to 1838. Scattered foxing, occasional staining, and age-toning; no annotations apparent in the leaves photographed. The volume has not been newly collated against the index of engravings. Binding substantially defective: spine strip lacking; boards loose and partially detached, with remnants and staining from an old tape repair along the hinges and endpapers. Printed boards and extremities worn, with rounded and chipped corners. An unrestored Poor copy, notably retaining its scarce original printed boards. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; Illustrated; Magazine/Periodical.].

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with small scrap from white label adhering to a margin. He explains that the reason that a letter has not been forwarded to him is that he has not, 'for years, had to do with the management of "the Illustrated London News"', although he does contribute to it. Nevertheless he will try to get the recipient 'a proof of the Port[rai]t. - with great pleasure'. He adds, in a postscript at the head of the page: 'I think the Memoir was cut out from the Times'.
