Book looks unread, clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. It systematically explores how ancient writers engaged with and transformed earlier biblical traditions, thereby forging new theological concepts. The work delves into a wide array of sources, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, Philo, the Book of Jubilees, 4 Ezra, and the Targumim, to illustrate this process. Central themes include the conceptual evolution of monotheism as shaped by cultural encounters, the imaginative speculation on the nature of celestial beings-such as the gender and physical perfection of angels-and the reinterpretation of physical geography into a theological framework. The volume examines the mechanisms used to establish interpretive authority, highlighting the role of the Heavenly Tablets in the Book of Jubilees as a device to authorize new legal, calendrical, and narrative claims by presenting them as timeless and divinely ordained. Further essays analyze the intricate reimagining of biblical figures. The portrayal of Balaam is shown to be multifaceted, depicted as both a false prophet and a source for messianic expectations. The targumic and midrashic expansions on figures like Eve's children, the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah, and Hagar are scrutinized to reveal the exegetical debates and theological concerns-such as culpability, justice, and the origins of idolatry-that animated these later narratives. The scope extends beyond antiquity to trace the surprising afterlife of these interpretive traditions, focusing particularly on the authority of 4 Ezra in Christian thought during the Renaissance. It uncovers the significant role this text played in theological arguments surrounding the discovery of America and the theorized origins of its indigenous peoples, demonstrating the long-term impact of ancient scriptural interpretation. -- Contents: A. The first part focuses on the reading and joining of the fragments, and gives an approximate reconstruction of the manuscripts and the composition. The second part discusses some disputed sections and themes in more detail, especially the beginning of the composition (4Q416 1), its relation to the Community Rule and the Hodayot, alleged sacerdotal fragments (4Q415 1 ii-2 I and 4Q418 81), as well as fragments describing fate after death (4Q418 55 and 69 ii). Pristine copy in like DJ, both entirely clean and sharp. Out of print. 'Prophets of Old and The Day of the End argues for a historical and literary approach to apocalyptic. It tackles the problem of the origins of early Jewish apocalyptic by describing the correspondences and differences between some so-called protoapocalyptic and apocalyptic texts. The bulk of the book consists of exegetical studies of parts of Zechariah, Deuterozechariah and the Enochic Book of Watchers. Most of these studies offer new interpretations of the examined texts. The framework of the book presents fresh perspectives on apocalyptic. Some parts are more important to the scholar of post-exilic prophecy, and other parts to the student of the intertestamental literature. Yet, the overall approach and the conclusions bearing on the phenomenon of apocalyptic are of interest to scholars of both fields. '.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Recent Dead Sea Scrolls research pays much attention to the question which texts were seen as scriptures, in which forms scriptures as well as scriptural traditions were transmitted, how the scrolls can illuminate the gradual move from authoritative scriptural texts to canon, and which different kinds of scriptural interpretation are attested in the Dead Sea Scrolls. This volume contains twelve essays read at the seventh meeting of the International Organization for Qumran Studies that address these questions either broadly, or in relation to specific texts.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the sixth meeting of the International Organization for Qumran Studies, held in 2007 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on the topic 'Qumran Cave 1 Revisited: Reconsidering the Cave 1 Texts Sixty Years after Their Discovery.' While the opening paper assesses theories about the character of Qumran Cave 1 in relation to the other Qumran caves, all other papers discuss texts from Cave 1, in particular six of the seven large scrolls found there in 1947: the two Isaiah scrolls, the Rule of the Community, the War Scroll, the Thanksgivings Scroll, and the Genesis Apocryphon. Many papers revisit those texts in light of the corresponding versions found in Cave 4.…
