In some areas seemingly boundless supplies have been exploited up to the limits of optimal utilization and beyond. order to check an irreversible depletion of the renewable resources like fish and shrimps, measures of responsible management have to be adopted at an early stage, and research to obtain reliable data for such management is to begin still earlier. Vhereas in 1968 the German Foundation for International Development hosted an International seminar to promote the development of the fishing industry in Southeast Asia, the rapid developnent prompted us to invite for another seminar, which was designed to provide a forum for ntensive discussions about proper approaches to an effective management of the fisheries resources in that region. Once more the Federal Research Board for Fisheries and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations offered their cooperation and expertize, which formed a solid basis for the success of this Seminar. The dedication and competence of the delegates of the participating countries imparted a spirit of confidence, that the fishing industries in Southeast Asia are geared to further development without impairing the replenishment of the seas, which is so essential to secure continuous nourishment for the ever increasing population in that region. This Report reproduces the intensive work of all the participants before and during the Seminar. We wish to thank all of them and trust that as a result of their toil this report will enhance the cooperation between the political, scientific and commercial sectors to become still better partners in development. - - -.
