A private collector does not collect according to a plan or a program, because the collection is formed by his personal taste, the luck to come across the items at the right time, and his ability to improve on the quality of the collection. When I saw the objects here exhibited assembled, for the first time in Leningrad and Moscow in an exchange exhibition, I was amazed. I had some idea of how diverse and beautiful the collection was from the two wonderful catalogues published by Philip Wilson Publications and edited by Simon de Pury. The exhibition in Russia drew about 400,000 visitors who must have wondered if Catherine II was still alive. From Leningrad and Moscow the collection has travelled to the United States on the initiative of the late Henry Ford, my longtime friend, and was shown at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House Museum. Subsequently it has been on a tour organized by Art Services International and has been seen in Miami, Omaha, Indianapolis, Fort Worth, Memphis, Palm Springs and Pittsburgh. The works now come home to the Villa Favorita where they will be on display this summer. I hope you will appreciate the efforts of everyone concerned with the installation, cataloging and all of the activities of the many who put this collection on public view. Although this piece is nowa- days referred to as a sealing- wax case, the term is not found in eighteenth century documents.
