Soft cover. Zustand: Good. The first book of prose published by either James Thurber or E. B. White, Is Sex Necessary? combines the humor and genius of both authors to examine those great mysteries of life -- romance, love, and marriage. A masterpiece of drollery, this 75th Anniversary Edition stands the test of time with its sidesplitting spoof of men, women, and psychologists; more than fifty funny illustrations by Thurber; and a new foreword by John Updike. From the Publisher: The classic send-up of sex manuals and how-to books--and one of the funniest books ever written. "One of the silliest books in years, and perfectly lovely."--Saturday Review "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.

Hardcover. First Edition. Thirteenth Printing. Original cloth-backed boards housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by both authors on the front endpaper with an ORIGINAL INITIALED DRAWING on the front pastedown by Thurber titled "Sex 1940" depicting a couple embracing while their dog looks on in dismay. Charming presentation copy, humorously INSCRIBED by both Thurber and White to Margaret Thurlow, at the time a secretary and copy editor at THE NEW YORKER: "For Margaret Thurlow/This book has an ancient/theme, now almost forgotten./EB White" and below "Yeh, as forgotten as/Lincoln's Gettysburg address./as ever/James Thurber." Thurlow worked in this position for 10 years, and among her many responsibilities, assisted the office manager in handling Thurber's correspondence from readers and publishers. Thurber and White joined THE NEW YORKER staff in 1927, and it was White who retrieved several examples of Thurber's drawings from the trash and had them first published. They would both contribute to the magazine for decades, and White would go on to publish such classics as STUART LITTLE (1945) and CHARLOTTE'S WEB (1952). From the library of noted bookseller William S. Reese with his book-plate on the inner front panel of the chemise. Rear hinge cracked, loose. Covers rubbed with some edgewear, particularly along the spine which has some fraying on the rear edge. Good, lacking the dustwrapper, in a Very Good slipcase.

Early edition of this collection of satirical essays in theme with the many Freudian sexual theories published in the 1920s; from the library of writer and social reformer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Octavo, original half cloth, frontispiece photograph of New York, illustrated with about fifty-two drawings by James Thurber. Signed and dated by Gilman in pencil on the front free endpaper below an antiquarian ownership signature which she has crossed out, "C. P. Gilman Nov. 1931." Gilman was an American humanist, novelist, writer, lecturer, advocate, and eugenicist who served as a role model for future generations of utopian feminists. Best known for her semi-autobiographical short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper,' which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis, Gilman has written works on gender and male domination that continue to maintain their relevance in today's society. Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. An exceptional association copy. Elwyn Brooks White was the American author behind several highly popular books for children, including 'Stuart Little' and 'Charlotte's Web.' After 'The New Yorker' was founded in 1925, White began submitting manuscripts to the magazine and was invited to join as a staff writer. White published his first article for The New Yorker that year and joined the staff in 1927, continuing to write for the magazine for nearly six decades. James Grover Thurber was an American cartoonist, writer, humorist, journalist and playwright whose works have frequently been adapted into films, including 'The Male Animal' and 'The Battle of the Sexes.' He joined the staff of The New Yorker in 1927 as an editor, with the help of White, who also jumpstarted Thurber's career as a cartoonist in 1930 after discovering some of Thurber's drawings in a trash can and submitting them for publication. Thurber and White collaborated on 'Is Sex Necessary" in 1929, about which White would later write, "Thurber and I were neither more, nor less, interested in the subject of love and marriage than anybody else of our age in that era. I recall that we were both profoundly interested in earning a living, and I think we somehow managed, simultaneously, to arrive at the conclusion that . the heavy writers had got sex down and were breaking its arm. We were determined that sex should maintain its high spirits.".

First Edition. 1st edition. Fine in a near fine dustjacket, fresh as a fountain soda. Black cloth, one of 2 bindings with no priority, despite guesses from Bowden D7a, since both were sold on publication day. But only our jacket is the 1st printing, and it is notoriously rare (go find another) because it was replaced almost immediately with a meeker, plainer jacket. Witty essays on the future that are dryer than Lawrence of Arabia. They're aimed at sex, love, and 10 other, less alluring subjects, and though we have all heard words of love it also has softer sounds like snaps, buttons, hooks, belts, and zippers.
