Zeitzeugnisse werden auf der Grundlage politischer Überzeugungen und/oder im Rahmen historischer Bildungsarbeit mit künstlerisch-ästhetischen Mitteln in Szene gesetzt. Trotz seiner expliziten Arbeit mit historischen Quellen ist das dokumentarische Theater bislang kein Gegenstand geschichtswissenschaftlicher Forschung geworden. Anlässlich des zehnjährigen Bestehens des Bremer Projekts Aus den Akten auf die Bühne setzte sich 2017 eine Tagung erstmals geschichtswissenschaftlich und interdisziplinär mit der Inszenierung historischer Quellen im Theater auseinander. Die Beiträge des Bandes sind Ergebnis dieser Tagung. In ihnen werden zum einen gegenwärtige Formen des dokumentarischen Theaters aus geschichts- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven untersucht.
