Leo Keith Thorsness (February 14, 1932 - May 2, 2017) was a Colonel in the United States Air Force who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the medal for an air engagement on April 19, 1967. He was shot down two weeks later and spent six years in captivity in North Vietnam as a prisoner of war. The Medal of Honor action included: "As their F-105 circled the parachutes of Kingfish 02-Alpha and 02-Bravo, relaying the position to Crown, the airborne search and rescue HC-130 command aircraft, Johnson spotted a MiG-17 off their right wing. Though not designed for air-to-air combat, their aircraft responded well as Thorsness attacked the MiG and destroyed it with 20-mm cannon fire, just as a second MiG closed on his tail. Low on fuel, Thorsness outran his pursuers and left the battle area to rendezvous with a KC-135 tanker over Laos." He returned to the battle with good effect. Surviving Hell recounts a six-year captivity marked by hours of brutal torture and days of agonizing boredom. Thorsness describes how he and other American POWs strove to keep their humanity. Thrown into solitary confinement for refusing to bow down to his captors, for instance, he disciplined his mind by memorizing long passages of poetry that other prisoners sent him by tap code. Surviving Hell is an eloquent story of resistance and survival. This famed U.S. Air Force officer during the Vietnam War was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and endured six years of torture as a prisoner of war; among many other distinctions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Signed FDC, 6½" X 3½", postally cancelled in Arlington, Virginia on 11 November 1979 and with "First Day of Issue" so stamped. Fine. Single 15-cent "Honoring Vietnam Veterans" U.S. postage stamp at upper right and large ArtCraft cachet at left. Near the center, Thorsness signs boldly in black fineline and adds "C.B.U." (cluster bomb unit). Also signed at center by noted Vietnam War vice admiral Joseph Metcalf III (1927-2007). Accompanied by a pristine glossy black-and-white 10" X 8" photograph, side-by-side head-and-shoulders portraits in uniform of Medal of Honor recipients Thorsness and Harold Furlong. A superb pair.
