A remarkable character, Thorburn emigrated from Scotland to New York in 1794. He evolved from being a nailmaker to prominent seedsman. He was the inspiration for the protagonist, "Lawrie Todd" in John Galt's triple-decker, LAWRIE TODD, OR THE SETTLERS IN THE WOODS, 1830. He married his third wife in 1853. This work is vigorous counter-point to the travel books by Frances Trollope and Isaac Fidler from 1832. Pasted to the recto of front endpaper of all volumes but 'Trout' is a small saying clipped from a newspaper regarding lending books. Blind stamp to the front endpapers for W H Smith and Son. Prior owner's inscription to the half-title of all but 'Trout' volume, R J Ratcliff. Gift inscription to the verso of front endpaper to 'Trout' from an individual named Clifford. 'The Pheasant', 'The Trout' and 'The Hare' are firmly bound. The remaining three volumes have some straining to binding. Pages are generally bright.
