In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Three signed "sets" bound into two of George Thomson's sought after Scottish song collection. Signed by the publisher and editor George Thomson to the foot of the titles, with number 'First' set completed in his hand to the Pleyel volume, and the 'Third' set completed in hand to the Kozeluch volume. This multi-volume collection of Scottish songs was edited and published by the entrepreneurial musician and publisher George Thomson. For the first volume, which originally appeared in 1793, Thomson commissioned the composer Ignaz Pleyel to provide musical settings. He subsequently expanded his cheme throughout his life in further volumes and editions, with over 100 songs contributed by poet Robert Burns.Although Thomson was in favour of the Union with England and regarded himself as a British citizen, his collections were created to please a specifically Scottish clientele. In a later cloth binding. Bound with the original title pages, with endpapers renewed. Lacking the engraved frontispieces. Comprising the following: With the first volume containing the 'First Set', Pleyel. With a preface to the second edition and contents of the first set, including compositions by Pleyel such as 'Tweedside', 'Nanie O', 'Galla Water' and 'Waly waly'. Bound together with 'Turn gentle Hermit of the Dale or Edwin and Angelina from Goldsmiths celebrated Poem called the Hermit, set to Music and Most Respectfully Inscribed to Lady Macgregor Murray' by Captain Daniel Menzies (Undated). Bound together with 'The King's Welcome to Scotland, Written upon the occasion of the Intended Visit of His Most Gracious Majesty King George the Fourth, to Edinburgh, by a Scotsman. Arranged for the Piano Forte. Second Edition (1822). The second volume contains the 'Third' set, Kozeluch, including compositions named 'Dainty Davie', 'Lumps o' pudding', 'Morag' and 'The quaker's wife'; bound together with the 'Fourth' set, comprising music from both Kozeluch and Pleyel, including compositions named 'Farewell to Ayr', 'The braes of Ballenden' and 'The Highland laddie'. These volumes are undated, dated from Jisc. Pagination runs continuously, with pagination for 'Third' set runs as issued according to institutional copies. Pagination is mirrored for each page of composition and lyrics. In a later cloth binding. Externally, excellent, with only minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Cloth reinforcement to the hinges following and preceding the front and rear endpapers respectively. Internally, generally firmly bound, with front free endpaper of 'Pleyel' working loose ever-so-slightly to the tail, with title page and first gathering of leaves of 'Kozeluch' Third set working loose to the head. Occasional additional cloth reinforcements to the gutter throughout. Pages are generally bright and clean, with dust dulling to the title pages and occasional mild toning and the odd spot throughout. Archival repair to losses to the first title pages. Additional contemporary ownership inscription to the title of 'Fourth' set. Very Good. None (illustrator). signed by author. book.…
