In den WarenkorbFirst edition, presentation copy, with a tipped-in autograph letter signed from the author to the Religious Tract Society, in which he expresses his pleasure "of sending you a copy of my work on the Vases of the Shang Dynasty." With this copy, Thoms also sent the society a printed translation of a recently acquired Chinese document, and this rare broadside is tipped onto the front pastedown. Peter Perring Thoms (1791-1855) arrived in China in 1814, bringing with him moveable type and other equipment sent at the expense of the East India Company and needed to print Robert Morrison's Dictionary of the Chinese Language. Over the coming years, he undertook research on Chinese vessels but was required to return to Britain on the completion of the dictionary printing project. "Thoms based his pioneering dissertation on the catalogue of the Song imperial collection of bronzes, the Bogu tulu, a 16-volume work on the arts of the Shang, Zhou and Han dynasties. Nowhere in his text does Thoms mention that the 'vases' were made of bronze. In fact, he was under the mistaken impression that the mirrors were made of polished steel, and most of the vases of gold" (Löwendahl). His letter is also a pitch for future custom for his printing business. "Allow me to add, that I was the intimate friend of Dr Milne while in China, and the constant companion of the Revd Dr Morrison for nearly 12 years, to say nothing of being the printer of his Chinese dictionary. I shall be very happy to undertake any of your works, however trifling, on the terms that you pay other printers." The broadside (415 x 450 mm) is titled "The original address presented to His Excellency Hwang, on his being appointed deputy-governor of the province of Canton, during the region of the emperor Kang-he, about the year 1684, containing the signatures of seven hundred and seventy-six merchants and tradesmen". Thoms acquired the document in February 1851 - "it had been in this country, without its import being known, for a series of years" - and published this translation. We have located only two copies (Massachusetts Historical Society and Kent State University). Cordier 695; Löwendahl 1122. Octavo. With 42 wood-engraved illustrations in text by A-Lae; title page with wood-engraved decoration in red. Original dark blue cloth, boards blocked in blind, front cover lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers, binder's ticket (Josiah Westley) on rear pastedown. Couple of pencil annotations internally. Cloth soiled and marked, including at head of spine, extra broadside with large closed tear (repaired with tissue): very good.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this culturally significant Macao imprint, the first translation of a Cantonese literary work into English. Shipped from China on an East India Company vessel, copies of Thoms's translation spread from London across Europe and found an enthusiastic audience: in 1827, the 77-year-old Goethe spent almost half a year pouring over the copy in the library of the Duke of Sax-Weimar. The last traceable complete example appeared in commerce in 1988. Thoms (1791-1855) arrived in China in 1814, bringing with him moveable type and other equipment sent at the expense of the East India Company and needed to print Robert Morrison's landmark Dictionary of the Chinese Language. Over the next decade, despite the all-consuming nature of the Dictionary project, Thoms found time for research into bronze vessels, linguistics, and literary history. Chinese Courtship takes as it subject the 17th-century Hua Jian Ji, a 60-chapter poem telling the story of a young scholar and his love for two women. "Given that some of his social betters appear to have claimed that the Chinese have no poetry worth translating, Thoms also set out to vindicate the Chinese poetic tradition in the eyes of European sceptics" (p. 149). In this, he was successful. Chinese Courtship, and other translations that came in its wake, offered western readers new cultural touchstones from which to draw inspiration. The appendix, "On the Revenue of China", is a translation of a manuscript composed by a Chinese official in 1823. It includes figures for taxation and grain production, descriptions of the economic situation in different provinces, and details on civil service and military establishments. Cordier 1760; Löwendahl 1523; Lust 1104. Octavo (240 x 151 mm). Diagrams in text, Chinese characters on title page and in text. Contemporary polished calf, raised bands, black spine label, spine ruled in gilt, gilt frame on boards, board edges and turn-ins rolled in blind, brown surface-paper endpapers, edges sprinkled red. Contemporary bookseller's ticket of W. White, Piccadilly, on front pastedown. Light rubbing and marking to calf, top edge dusty, contents fresh: a fine copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition. Title printed in red and black, numerous illustrations in the text. 8vo. Original cloth. Overall a very good copy. 63pp. London, Privately Published & Printed, and sold by James Gilbert, The work is based on the Xuanhe bogu tu, an illustrated catalogue of some 800 archaic bronzes in the collection of the Sung Dynasty's Huizong Emperor. The text of the catalogue goes back to the 12th century but the work was reprinted by the order of the Qianlong Emperor in 1752. The present work reproduces a selection of 42 vases together with a translation of the inscriptions as well as details on their size and weight. Thoms had published the article in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Socity of Great Britain and Ireland in 1834 under the title "Description of Ancient Chinese Vases". P. P. Thoms (?-1951) came to China on behalf of the East India Company and was the first to set up a European movable type printing press in Canton in 1814. He printed Morrison's comprehensive 'Chinese Dictionary' in three volumes between 1815 and 1822. He returned to England in 1825 and in the 1830s set up his own printing shop in Warwick Square in the 1830s. .
