First edition. xx, 242pp. Søren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author who is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher. His progress from anguish to faith was slow and difficult, but his transition exemplifies what spiritual strength faith requires of a Christian. This book is both a biographical study and philosophical interpretation of his beliefs, with new evidence from untranslated manuscripts in Copenhagen and from Kierkegaard's pseudonymous works. The author, Josiah Thompson (b. 1935), is an American writer, retired professional private investigator, and former philosophy professor. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a small blind-stamped emblem on both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with some damp marking on the front board and more noticeable damp marking and staining on the rear board. The spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with a previous owner's name and address label on the front fixed endpaper. The clipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear and bumping to the spine ends. The top of the spine also has small nicks and there is a tear of about 1/2" on the top front spine corner.
