In fair condition, on discoloured and lightly-worn paper, with closed tear at foot of gutter. Also present is a typed transcript. The letter concerns a proposed three-day 'excursion to th…e Medway'. Hook has engagements that will interefere, but Thompson undertakes to land him 'safe at the Tower by seven o'clock on Saturday'. Thompson's plan is 'as follows, the city of London Steamer leaves the Tower Stairs a little before ten oClock on Thursday with my friends & as I have official business at Woolwich I shall go on board there, we stop near Southend at the boundary of the Lord Mayors jurisdiction, where we dine & I shall there be joined by the Lords of the Admiralty Mr. Croker [i.e. John Wilson Croker (1780-1857)] etc (but from there I fear they will return to town) We proceed to Wrights at Rochester where we sleep, Friday morning we shall visit Upnor Castle which is the boundary of my jurisdiction in the Medway & then proceed to Sheerness & view that great naval arsenal Admiral Blackwoods flag ship [Vice-Admiral Sir Henry Blackwood (1770-1832)] &c. at this place I give a boat to be sailed for by the Fishermen & after this engagement I return to Wrights where I entertain the Port Admiral & His Officers, the Corporation of Rochester & the nobility & gentry of the neighbourhood.' He will return to town on the Saturday by steamer. Hook now has 'a hasty sketch' of Thompson's plans, and he will 'feel extremely obliged by whatever time you can give me during this cockney expedition'.

In den WarenkorbPinned to the second leaf is a printed card of admittance to a 'General Meeting' of the Society for Psychical Research, Council Chamber, Westminster Town Hall, 16 July 1900, at which 'The following Paper will be read: - | "On Trance-Utterance and other Phenomena observed with Mrs. Thompson." | By the President.' The letter is 3p…p., 16mo. Bifolium. Both letter and card in good condition, lightly aged. The subject of the letter is clearly the speech mentioned on the card, given by Myers. After thanking Westlake for his 'kind letter' ('I thoroughly appreciate your kind expression of approval') she states: 'Mr. Myers began by giving only a few of the earlier things, folks will be much surprised when they hear of the latter day things'. She explains that her 'neglect not writing earlier' is due to 'visitors in the house'. She concludes by asking to know 'whether Rev. [Hawes?] is preaching in the morning or evening of 29th.'.

In den WarenkorbFor Murchison and the subject of the letter, the eminent Scottish physician and medical author James Copland (1791-1870), see the Oxford DNB. Both items bifoliums; and both in good condition, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to the reverse of the second leaf. ONE: 3pp, 12mo. He begins by saying that he has seen Sir H…enry Thompson (1820-1904), who 'cannot possibly meet us to-morrow but he will be at Dr Coplands at 3.40 on Thursday That is the day of my Law Case but I will be there if I can'. In the meantime 'it might be well to suspend the injections of Bladder until you see Sir Henry as he seems to be opposed to them and trust to the iron the bladder of ice, and the frequent introduction into the rectum of small pieces of ice, with the edges rounded off in water & well greased'. TWO: 2pp, 12mo. Headed 'Sunday Evening | Dr. James Copland's case'. The letter begins: 'Dear Dr Cleveland | I fear that the poor Doctor is almost beyond our Art. I think he is sinking more from uraemia than fresh haemorrhage and I have recommended a large [?] over the stomach'. He also thinks that Copland 'ought to have his bowels freely acted on either by a strong Cathartic enema, or if this fails, by one or two drops of Croton Oil by mouth. This I have left for you to decide.' Copland died two days after the writing of this letter. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
