In den WarenkorbZustand: Fair. First Edition. Scarce first edition of the public debate on American slavery held over five nights (June 13?17, 1836) between George Thompson, a prominent British abolitionist, and Rev. Robert J. Breckinridge, an American Presbyterian clergyman from Kentucky who supported gradual emancipation and would later join the Union. Breckinridge accepted Thompson's challenge to a debate, in the hopes of defending the American clergy, against Thompson's accusation that American Christian ministers actively promoted and enabled slavery. Signed by Joseph Graham on verso of the front wrap in ink. Graham was a member of the Cincinnati Union Safety Committee and present during the infamous pro-slavery riots targeting the abolitionist newspaper The Philanthropist , published by James G. Birney, with Graham supposedly pleading to the mobs to throw the newspapers in the river instead of creating a fire that could have spread to the surrounding buildings. His name is also stamped to rear with No. 7 written in ink beside it. Also signed in pencil by George Chambers, Esquire (1786-1866), a U.S. Congressman representing Pennsylvania and later Supreme Court justice of the state, to the verso of the front wrap. Fair copy with worn paper wraps. Losses to head/tail and edges of the wraps (see image). Moisture marks also to covers. Additional No. 7 written in ink on the title page. Numerous bent top corners and occasional pressed foliage from a previous owner. Page 1 of the Introduction was printed past the page line. Text overall remains clean with no defacements. 5.5 x 8 in (14 x 20.25 cm).…
