Damaged copy of Rumford's classic work. The pagination matches the description of the third edition, but without th…e title page and imprint it is difficult to be sure. Rumford (he became a Count of the Holy Roman Empire in 1791 in recognition of his work for the Prince-Elector of Bavaria) was a polymath, whose achievements ranged from furnaces to nutritious soup for the poor. Born in America, he was a Loyalist in the War of Independence, and ended up in London, then Paris and Munich. As well as solving the problems of inefficient fireplaces he helped to found the Royal Institute, and - apparently - invented thermal underwear. One of the great Enlightenment figures.

In the War of Independence, he remained loyal to the Br…itish and raised a regiment , the King's American Dragoons. In 1785, at the request of Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, he left England and settled in Munich. This volume of thirteen papers is dedicated to Elector Maximilian Joseph. The major part of the book are accounts of experiments on gun-powder and cannon, lifetime interests of Rumford. One paper is on the absorption of moisture in different clothing materials.The portrait is a stipple engraving, head and shoulders, to left, oval, in uniform, after Kellerhofen, by Joseph Rauschmayr. This engraving is not in the British Museum or NPG.

R…umford, the noted physicist and inventor, describes kitchen fire-places, the roaster, dripping-pan, heating an iron oven, construction of boilers, steam cooking, warming rooms, saucepan heaters, portable furnaces, tea-kettles (p.301), kitchen utensils for the poor, "account of a concealed kitchen," chimneys, warm bathing, management of fires, use of steam as a vehicle for transporting heat, etc. Thompson is known also as the inventor of the coffee percolator (1806/1812), published in a later volume. PROVENANCE: Anne Willan (born 1938) is a recognized authority on French cooking, with more than 35 years of experience as a cooking teacher, cookbook author and food columnist. She is the founder of the prestigious Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne, which operated in Burgundy France from 1991 until 2007.

Rumford's early papers were importent steps towards the conception of the principle of the "Conservation of Energy" and the thermodynamical laws."The importence of this investigation here entered into, - inasmuch as it applies to most of the operations of nature as well as art, - appears so manifest, that we shall not recapitulate what the author advances on the subject. before he proceeds to the details of his experiments for the purpose oof computing the emissions of heat from various bodies under a variety of circumstances, he finds it necessary to prmise a minute description of the principal part of the apparatus he contrived for the purpose."(Abstract).In his famous paper of 1798 "An Inquiry Concerning the Source of Heat Which is Exicited by Friction" showed that heat is a form of motion and not a substance as it was seen in the 18th century."He had been lead to the hypothesis that friction is an inexhaustable source of heat while considering the boring of a canon at Munich's military arsenal and had proceeded to experiment with brass guns at the arsenal. The experiments confirm the hypothesis, justifying his conclusion that heat is not a material substance as others had believed. FIRST EDITION of the complete 3-volume set, containing 15 essays; third edition of volume 1 (?The third edition?), first edition of volume 2, and of volume 3 despite ?A new edition? on the title-page. These three volumes contain 15 essays on an establishment for the poor in Bavaria, and on the principles for such establishments; of food, particularly for the poor; on chimney and kitchen fireplaces and the economy of fuel; on the propagation of heat in fluids and other substances; on friction as a source of heat; on the use of steam for transporting heat; and on the salubrity of warm bathing. Much space is devoted to domestic science: Thompson studied air currents in open fireplaces and introduced several elements of their design found in modern chimneys, thus increasing their efficiency. He studied domestic cooking stoves and utensils in great detail, inventing the enclosed kitchen range, the coffee percolator, and steam heating systems for houses and even large buildings. In a remarkably varied career Thompson received many honours in England, America, Germany, and elsewhere, and established prizes for scientific research in America and England. In London he founded the Royal Institution. The first volume of this complicated book was first published in parts in 1796; the text of the third volume was evidently published before the title-page, and the first three parts were available separately.
