An insightful history from the prolific medievalist and antiquarian Thomas Wright, tracing the development of comic literature and art from the ancient Egyptians and Greeks up to the social caricatures of the Georgian period. In the process we are transported through the varying comical reactions to the transformation of Europe over the course of a millennium. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Bookplate and signature of a previous owner to the front paste down. Tipped-in news clipping to the front free endpaper. Externally, generally smart with bumping and rubbing, leading to mild to moderate loss of cloth, particularly to the spine head and tail and along the joints, which also show signs of cracking. Cloth is relatively marked and discoloured, including with a notable tide mark, mainly affecting the front board. Internally, generally firmly bound, a little weaker to the hinges and page 144. Tide marks to both paste downs and endpapers, also stretching to the title page to the front.
