Featuring monochromatic illustration, and twelve colour illustrated plates by various illustrators, including Henry Thomas Alken. Alken was an English painter and engraver chiefly known as a caricaturist and illustrator of sporting subjects, as seen within this text. This copy features an introduction by Lord Willoughby de Broke. A new edition. In a cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed with marks and tidemarks to boards. Wear to bumped corners and bumping to head and tail of spine. Loss to spine. Internally, generally firmly bound though one plate is disbound. A beautifully illustrated copy of this collection of extracts from the notable work of the 'master of fox-hounds' Thomas Smith, who served as the Master of the Craven Hounds, and of the Pytchley, Northamptonshire. This is a 'New Edition' copy, with additional coloured plates and in-text illustrations, and an introduction by Lord Willoughby de Broke (Richard Greville Verney), Verney was a British peer and conservative politician who also wrote a book on foxhunting called 'Hunting the Fox', published in 1921. With a tipped in bookplate of a 'Richard Deaves Hammond' to the front free-endpaper. Collated, complete with twelve full page plates, eight of which were in colour. The coloured illustrations are from contemporary prints and paintings by such notable artists as J. F. Herring, James Pollard, and Henry Alken. The black and white illustrations are facsimile reproductions from the originals by Tom Smith in the earlier edition of this work. In the publisher's original quarter green cloth binding, with gilt-stamped title and fox motif to the front board. Externally, minor bumping to head and tail of spine. Handling marks to fore edge of front board. Tipped in bookplate to front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. bInding only strained to frontispiece plate, partially detached to tail of gutter, but reasonably firm. Tape remnants upper corners.Donald Shaw MacLaughlan was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada on November 9, 1876. His family moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1890 where he began to experiment with different art media; watercolor, oil painting and finally, etching - with a few attempts at lithography. He spent much of his early years at the Boston Public Library studying the work of printmakers, from Durer and Rembrandt to the 18th century English, French and Italian masters.Like many American artists of the time MacLaughlan traveled to Europe to study in Paris, enrolling in the Ecole des Beaux Arts and studied further with Jean Leon Gerome and Jean Paul Laurens. In 1899 he began producing etchings, which became his major interest until his death in 1938. In 1900 he created a set of 25 etched views of Paris and in 1901 exhibited two etchings in the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He returned to the U.S. in 1903, then went back to Paris the following year.From the collection of Natalie Williams of Marshall, Texas.
