(ESTC, T5309). Ex Libris Alexander Baillie of Dochfour with his fine engraved bookplate to upper pastedown. Thomas Tyers (1726 1787) was an English writer, barrister, and co-proprietor of Vauxhall Gardens, known for his dilettante literary output and association with Samuel Johnson. Born the eldest son of Jonathan Tyers, the entrepreneur who developed Vauxhall Gardens as a premier London pleasure ground. His writings, often produced in limited editions reflecting his eccentric pursuits, included Political Conferences between Several Great Men (1780). On his father's death in 1767, Tyers became joint manager of Vauxhall Gardens with his brother Jonathan. His father had left him well off, and according to James Boswell in his Life of Samuel Johnson he "ran about the world with a pleasant carelessness". He was a favourite with Samuel Johnson, who used to call him Tom Tyers, and confessed that Tyers always told him something that he did not know before; it was he who said of Johnson that he always talked as if he were talking on oath. In 1780, Tyers published Political Conferences between Several Great Men in the Last and Present Century, a satirical dialogue imagining debates among historical figures and modern politicians on governance and liberty; a second edition followed in 1781 with added notes. The work aimed to expose perceived hypocrisies in Whig policies.

In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. xi, [i], 143; complete with half title; in early 19th-century calf, gilt, spine gilt, dark brown morocco labels (traces of rubbing). Second edition, with a new preface: the first edition, published earlier the same year, was only half as long. ODNB calls this a 'non-chronological series of biographical anecdotes relating to Pope, and unmitigated praise for the poet throughout'. Thomas Tyers (1724/5-1787) was the proprietor of Vauxhall Gardens. He was a good friend of both Johnson and Boswell; Johnson portrayed him in the Idler as Tom Restless, an 'ambulatory' student who wandered about coffee houses and debating clubs looking for ideas, but paid little attention to books. He was, however, actually very well read, and Johnson later confessed that Tyers always told him 'something he did not know'. This book is described in ESTC as having a plate, but this is an error; the only illustration is an engraved vignette of Memory on the title-page. With a few small manuscript corrections in the text (e.g. on pp. 20 and 25); there are similar markings in the copy which Tyers gave to Samuel Johnson, now in the Hyde collection at Harvard. Provenance: engraved bookplate of the historian John Adolphus (1768-1845).
