The Maiden Stakes, as its name suggests, begins at at Horse racing track - in this case Hyde Park, before moving on to become a comedy of manners. The author also wrote tragedies - with equal lack of success. He was more noted in the Manchester area as being a prominent member of the Evangelical Protestant Union. In his obituary mention was made that 'so great was the feeling of Roman Catholics against him, that members of the police force begged him at one time not to venture out without protection'. Thomas Smelt, [ 1819 - 1893 ] staunch protestant, Merchant & forgotten playwright. 300 grams.
