In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: As New. Over 650 colour illus., catalogues of pictures, portraits, lithographs and prints, appendices; 1,000pp. 4to orig. blue cloth, The first major study of England's foremost cattle painter.Cooper's reputation has suffered because of the numbers of copies, fakes, and lesser-quality works produced in extreme old age, which have been taken to be representative of his ability. He was not a stock painter producing portraits of single animals for their owners. His pictures, except in rare exceptions, depict groups of animals carefully composed, in a manner inspired by the Dutch Old Masters, like Cuyp and Potter.Kenneth Westwood has put forward a body of evidence to show Cooper was the equal of the best Victorian landscape painters. His painting, as would be expected of a fine lithographer, was based on sound draughtsmanship. He made hundreds of sketches, which he did not sell, but used as an image library to construct his pictures. Apart from the familiar pictures of cattle and sheep in the Canterbury meadows, Cooper produced dramatic droving and snow scenes, and also created pictures like The Half-Past One O'Clock Charge at Waterloo, which were a marked contrast to his usual subjects.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition. Elephant folio. Handsomely bound in contemporary half red morocco over marbled boards with five raised bands to the spine, compartments richly decorated in gilt and with titles in gilt. All edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 26 tinted lithograph plates, including the title page. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with scuffing to the leather covering the corners, a little rubbing and the odd minor mark. The contents with the contemporary engraved armorial bookplate of Francis Markham to the front pastedown, the neat ink ownership inscription of Maria Markham to the front endpaper and some light scatted foxing largely to page margins, are otherwise in excellent order. The plates remain exceptionally bright and fresh for a work where foxing is often an issue. An attractive copy of a grand book. The first edition of Cooper's outstanding lithographic work, praised by both contemporary and modern critics as containing plates which "are unsurpassed in their sheer brilliance of execution" (Westwood). Representing Cooper's last work on stone, 'Groups of Cattle, Drawn From Nature' confirmed his reputation throughout Europe as one of the pre-eminent animal artists of his age. A beautifully bound and unusually fresh copy of Cooper's lithographic masterpiece. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Zustand: Very good. - 23 words plus 8 lines of verse are penned in black ink, filling one side of a sheet of his personalized, 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide, black-bordered letterhead with his address printed at top right beside a vignette featuring 4 miniature cows. The letter has been mounted on a slightly larger piece of cream card. Signed "Thomas Sidney Cooper". There are 2 small, light stains to the left margin. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. Cooper sends his autograph, commenting: "I hope the Young Lady will more highly esteem the Autograph accompanied by the following lines". After signing the letter he adds eight lines of verse beginning: "Tis calm assurance 'All is Well' / Though how or where I cannot tell". Below the verse he writes "This is faith" and signs again with his initials.Thomas Sidney Cooper [1803-1902] was an English landscape painter noted for his images of cattle and farm animals. This earned him the name "Cow Cooper"--hence the vignette of cows on his letterhead. He was born in Canterbury, Kent and his home, Vernon Holme, Harbledown, Kent, which is now a school, is listed among the sites to see when visiting Canterbury.
