See Armstrong's entry in the Oxford DNB. For Gauntlett, who was Professor of Cello at the RAM from 1947 to 1965, see the Times obituary by Sir Anthony Lewis, and the excellent article on the 'Semibrevity' blog: 'Ambrose Gauntlett, forgotten gamba player and continuo cellist', beginning: "Although Ambrose Gauntlett (1889-1978) sp…ent most of his career as a full-time orchestral principal, he was the most sought-after continuo cellist and gamba player in the UK for many years." The musicologist Professor Hans van Dijk describes Gauntlett as 'A very great gambaplayer indeed!' Addressed to 'Dear Amrbose' and signed 'T. A.' He thanks him 'very much indeed for your kindness in sending me this helpful book about bread-making, which I am glad to have. It will help me a lot. I can now generally turn out a fairly reliable and palatable loaf, but my repertory is severly limited, and I daresay I shall have some pun in trying to extend it by attempting some of these more exotic recipes.'.

12mo, 1 p. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with slight traces of mount on reverse. Regretting, given his 'keen interest' in the affairs of the Association and of the College, that Humberstone cannot attend a meeting of the RCS Association. The influence of the Association is 'probably considerable' regarding 'the development in pro…gress', as many members are very active in the matter.

12mo, 2 pp. Nineteen lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged paper. Thanking him for his 'excellent book on University Reform in London': 'I read it carefully when it came out and was much impressed by your clear statement of the problem and the thoughtful discussion of possible solutions'. He will now prize his ow…n copy, as it is 'a really important contribution to a subject which has naturally interested me for the past 18 years'. He fears Humberstone will 'not think very much of the Departmental Committee's Report', which is however 'the best we could do under the circumstances'.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Small slim 8vo, pp157 + 2 pages of adverts with small b/w illustrations in the text to pages 9, 11, 15, 36, and 40. Hardcover no dust jacket. Binding of green cloth with gilt titles to spine and blind stamped designs to boards and spine in very good condition with a little rubbing to e…dges and tips. Inside starting to crack pages 106/107 but all pages still well bound and secure and in lovely clean and bright condition with no foxing, marking or aging. Dubbing himself 'Darwin's bulldog', Huxley is primarily known as a popularizer of Darwin's theory and also for his war with theology and consequently invented what he conceived to be the appropriate title of 'agnostic'. From 1860 to 1863 Huxley developed his ideas, presenting them in lectures to working men, students and the general public, followed by publication. Also in 1862 a series of talks to working men was printed lecture by lecture as pamphlets, later bound up as a little green book; the first copies went on sale in December and prompted Darwin to write in dismay to Huxley stating of his six lectures "They are simply perfect" even though Huxley himself did not intend them to be widely circulated. An excellent copy of this very scarce first clothbound edition.

Letterhead with RAM coat of arms in red. Creased and with closed tears at head and foot neatly repaired with archival tape. Begins: 'Dear Ambrose, / I am writing to request you to continue your work in the Royal Academy of Music during the Academic Year, 1964/5, up to the end of the Summer Term in 1965. / I very much regret that the present occasion is the last on which I shall be able to renew this invitation, but I am afraid that you have now reached the age at which a further extension is no longer possible. I know how devoted your services to the Royal Academy of Music have been since you first entered it in 1910, and you will be very much missed by all your pupils and colleagues and by myself personally. When an opportunity occurs, I shall hope to express our thanks personally.' He ends in the hope that there will be 'opportunities for you to assist us in various directions even when you have ceased to be a regular member of the professorial staff'.

A document of some historical significance. The context of is described in Chalmers' entry in the Oxford DNB: 'In 1835 the whig government of Viscount Melbourne appointed a royal commission of inquiry to investigate church accommodation in Scotland, but the commission moved slowly about its work and angered Chalmers and the chur…ch extensionists by what they perceived as stalling methods and a bias towards the dissenters.' Lister's entry explains his involvement, stating that on 19 July 1835 'he was one of those commissioned to investigate the opportunities for religious worship and the means of religious instruction in Scotland.' From the papers of Lister's wife the future Lady Theresa Lewis (1803-1865). 4pp, 12mo. Forty-five lines. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded for postage. Signed 'Thos Chalmers. / With Dr Chalmers most respectful acknowledgments to Mr Lister.' Dated in pencil (by Lister?) 'Feb 24. 1836.' Chalmers dives straight in without a salutation: '1. It is most desired that an interim report on the Statistics of those localities for which New Churches are now in preparation, and their claims to an endowment - should be completed as soon as possible.' In the second point Chalmers states 'That an endowment should in every instance be accompanied by the enactment of a low rent rent, and a district be assigned to the place of worship with a preference to its sittings in favour of the people who reside in that district.' The third and last point covers two pages of close text. It goes into greater detail about 'a low-rent rent and a territorial district', with respect to 'dissenting ministers', 'established church', 'Legislature' and 'meeting-houses'.

4pp., 4to. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition, lightly aged, with short closed tears at edges of some folds. An excellent letter, indignantly countering what must be the most serious accusation one historian can level against another, that of making 'false quotations'. The recipient is not named, but from the conte…xt is undoubtedly the Headmaster of Rugby School, Thomas Arnold, who since the previous year had held the Regius Professorship of History at Oxford, and would die four months later, on 12 June 1842. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir | You will not, I am certain, consider it as a liberty if I address you a few lines on the subject of an allusion [last word underlined] to a passage in my History of the Middle Ages which I understand you to have made in a recent lecture at Oxford. The great respect which I bear to you will be a sufficient excuse; for, in an ordinary case, I should have waited for publication of the lecture, & made my observations then, or not, as I might have thought it expedient'. He does not have 'an exact knowledge of what you said concerning me', but assures Arnold of the 'very great annoyance' he felt when 'Dr Buckland [i.e. the geologist and cleric William Buckland (1784-1856)], some weeks since, told me, in his jocular language, "Dr Arnold has been blowing you up for false quotations'. He did not have 'the slightest notion what was the specific charge', but considered it 'a most serious imputation upon any writer', and subsequently 'obtained some information' from 'Dr. B.', 'vague indeed, but enough to make me conjecture that your charge related to the well-known passage in Eligius. This has been confirmed since by a letter which a friend of mine received from Oxford; but the words said to have been used by you are very loosely given from memory. It appears however that you spoke in very handsome terms of my general character as a faithful historian'. Arnold has almost certainly overlooked the fact that 'in the fourth edition of my work, & in all that followed, I have retracted the error into which I had been led, so far as it was an error, in the fullest manner; not silently correcting or omitting the passage, but leaving it as it stood, with a note acknowledging it to be highly exaggerated, in consequence of the wrong interpretation which through Mosheim's quotation, many besides myself had put upon the original writer's meaning. On reading this note again, after several years, it appears to me that I have gone to the utmost in saying that the passage quoted by Mosheim ought never to be applied again; for in reality it is one of importance, & serves to confirm what Mosheim himself has said, though Maclaine, & those who followed him, went much farther than it would warrant.' He discusses a Latin sentence, declaring: 'I need not add that this was no false quotation, nor even a garbled one, on the part of Mosheim, who gave an entire [?] - still less on my part, who only quoted him & Robertson.' He ends by declaring his expectation that 'when your lectures go to the press, you will do me the justice of taking notice' that he has corrected 'the error into which I had been led'. In conclusion he observes, for the purpose of bring his work 'to the public eye, it has been absolutely necessary to give modern authorities'.

Signed 'Geo. Ticknor'. The male recipient is not named, but the item is from the papers of the author Lady Theresa Lewis (1803-1865), successively wife of the novelist Thomas Henry Lister (1800-1842) and the Liberal politician Sir George Cornewall Lewis (1806-1863), all of whom have entries in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. On first… leaf of a bifolium, with a trace of glue from mount to the second leaf. In good condition, lightly aged and folded for postage. He is 'much interested that the Life of Ferdinand & Isabella written by a friend in America should be known in England, where it has already obtained some reputation & is well liked by Hallam, Allen & Southey.' He asks him to 'do me the favour to accept a copy of it from me. If it serves for nothing else, it may serve to remind you of the kindness you and your friends have shown Mrs. Ticknor and myself ever since we have been in Europe.' From the papers of Lady Theresa Lewis, which also contain two letters to her from Prescott.
