Virtue & Co. in the early 1890s, presents the Bard's dramatic works in a richly designed Victorian format. Each volume is illustrated with high-quality photogravure portraits of leading stage actors of the day, offering both literary content and a glimpse into late 19th-century theatrical culture. Elegantly printed with black text framed by red-ruled borders, and bound in leather-backed boards with raised bands and gilt decoration, the set exemplifies the period's appreciation for Shakespeare as both a national literary figure and a popular cultural icon. A very good set of 4 hardback volumes, each with black leather spine and corners, with raised bands, burgundy morocco labels, and gilt decoration and titles. With dark blue cloth over boards. Leather with some scuffing and bumping, and cloth with some light wear and scuffing generally, but Volume IV more has some significant discoloration and heavier wear. Still an attractive set. Some cracking to endpapers at gutter at inner hinges in places, but all volumes are soundly bound and secure. Text is bright and clean throughout with some light usage marks. Some spotting to endpapers. The text features black text with red ruled borders. The photogravure images are lovely and clean and of excellent quality. There are 28 images in total (all as called for). Text in English. Some of the tissue guards have light foxing that has affected the plates and opposite pages otherwise a pristine set with pristine text pages. Printed by Chiswick Press - Whittingham and Wilkins. A good full leather hardback with original covers and spine rebacked on leather. Covers feature elaborate blind embossed decoration with gilt and raised bands. Original leather is heavily worn, particularly to spine. Prize binding from Trinity College, Dublin, dated to 1867. Marbled endpapers with binders gilt stamp of Hodges, Smith & Co, Dublin, and small bookseller's sticker. Where the rebacking has taken place, the inner joints have been left completely uncovered and worn, so have an unattractive appearance, but the binding is sound. Some exposed areas of boards where endpapers have been damaged when the covers have been detached. Features a portrait frontispiece of Shakespeare following the first folio portrait of 1623. With foxing to blanks at each end of the book, and the frontispiece and tissue guard. The text is beautifully clean throughout. Bright and all soundly bound. Shiny gilt edges to the text block. Despite the book's wear, it has an impressive appearance. A very nice Shakespearean addition to any library shelf. viii + 943pp + 1pp. Weight approximately 2.5kg (unpacked).
