Aus dem Englischen übersetzt und mit Anmerkungen vermehr von Wenzl Johann Langsvert"- First German Edition of "Cases of Hydrocele and Hernia" (1788)! Thomas Keate (1745-1821), "surgeon, was born in 1745, became a pupil at St. George's Hospital, London, and was afterwards assistant to John Gunning [q. v.], surgeon to the hospital. On a vacancy arising in the surgeoncy in succession to Charles Hawkins, there was a sharp contest (1792) between Keate and Home (afterwards Sir Everard), whom John Hunter favoured. Keate was elected [see HUNTER, JOHN, (1728- 1793)]. He succeeded Hunter in 1793 as surgeon-general to the army. He was an examiner at the College of Surgeons from 1800, and master in 1802, 1809, 1818. He was an excellent surgeon, and was the first to tie the subclavian artery for aneurysm (see G. J. GUTHRIE, On Wounds and Injuries of the Arteries). But he was unpunctual and negligent of his hospital duties, and in 1813 he resigned his hospital appointment. He was surgeon to the Prince of Wales, afterwards George IV, and to Chelsea Hospital, where he died 5 July 1821, aged 76. Keate wrote little on surgery. He published 'Cases of Hydrocele and Hernia,' 4to, London, 1788, and several controversial papers, the chief being 'Observations on the Fifth Report of the Commissioners of Medical Enquiry,' 4to, London, 1808; the report had censured many points in Keate's administration (see also R. A printed form, completed in manuscript, with the ten signatures of leading figures in the medical world of Georgian London in a column at bottom right, the… first two grouped as 'Governors' and the other seven as 'Examiners': 'Charles Blicke | David Dundas | C Hawkins | J Earle | G Chandler | T Forster | Everard Home | William Blizard | Henry Cline'. Engraved in copperplate, the document reads (with manuscript parts in square brackets): 'To the Right Honble. the Secretary at War | Sir | We have Examined Mr. [William Williams] and find him qualified to serve as Surgeon [dash] to any [Regiment] in His Majesty's Service | We are | Sir | Your Most Obedt. Servants | [Theatre] Master'. Some details of the signatories are to be found in the 1812 'General List of the Members of the Royal College of Surgeons in London'. Five of the nine have entries in the Oxford DNB: Sir Charles Blicke (1745-1815); Henry Cline (1750-1837); Sir James Earle (1755-1817); Sir Everard Home (1756-1832); Sir William Blizard (c.1744-1835). The other four signatories are: George Chandler (of Stamford Street and a Governor in 1812); Sir David Dundas (1749-1826) (not yet knighted, 'Serjeant Surgeon to his Majesty, Richmond', and a Governor in 1812); Thompson Forster (d.1830), Senior Surgeon to Guy's Hospital (of Southampton Street, Bloomsbury, and Master in 1812); Charles Hawkins (of Sloane Street, Chelsea, and a Governor in 1812). From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of# George III'.

Uncommon, with less than a dozen copies located institutionally world-wide. An excellent copy with an attractive provenance, coming from the Mount Stewart library of General Charles Stewart, 3rd… marquess of Londonderry, pencilled press marks to the front pastedown. Keate was elected surgeon-general to the army in 1798, became examiner of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1802, and was master 1802, 1809, and 1818. Keate "was an excellent surgeon, and was the first to tie the subclavian artery for aneurysm. But he was unpunctual and negligent of his hospital duties. [and] wrote little on surgery. He published. several controversial papers, the chief being Observations on the Fifth Report of the Commissioners of Military Enquiry; the report censured the medical board for showing a lack of proper control, for irregularities in promotion, for making new and unnecessary appointments, for waste and extravagance, and for opening general hospitals unnecessarily. Keate had carried out his duties with success but blame had nevertheless fallen upon him. The board was dissolved in 1809 and Keate was retired with a small allowance. He then complained of how his public duties had interfered with his private practice" (ODNB). Keate had become regimental surgeon to the foot guards in 1778, and was also inspector of the regimental hospital system until his election to surgeon-general, his understanding of the army's medical requirements was undoubtedly better grounded than those of the members of the Army Medical Board whose experience covered "merely London hospital work" ("Military and Naval Hospitals", in The Hospital 9 December 1893). Keate died in Chelsea Hospital in 1821. Wellcome III, p.380 Quarto (252 x 209 mm). Contemporary green half calf, brown daubed paste paper boards, black morocco label to the spine, edges sprinkled brown. Spine just a touch sunned, very light shelf-wear, pale toning to the text-block and the very occasional spot of foxing, ?bound without half-title, a very good copy indeed.
