"This book is not about the expertise of golfers or the wonderful golfing performances seen at West Linton over the last one hundred years. Instead we decided that the place, the people and the interesting events that have taken place over the last century are what matter. Without a doubt there are many amusing stories concerning events at the Club which we have not been able to track down and which have been lost in the mists of time. We have, however, been extremely fortunate to have had at our disposal a complete set of minutes of Club meetings from the very fist meeting on 7 June 1890. Our task would have been much more difficult without access to such valuable information." Small quarto, spine a bit darkened, rear board slty spotted at top, edges boards a bit dust dulled, head of spine frayed with a 1cm. tear. Corners and edges slty rubbed but a very fresh, bright and clean copy "with 50 splendid steel engravings" although this copy of this issue is complete with the 34 fine plates as called for in the list of plates provided. Some plates are by H.K. Halbot Browne [Phiz], though in a restrained style for him.Others are by J.H.Shepherd, J.Salmon , R.Garland and L.Woods. Collates thus:[vi], [1], 2-211pp. Originally published in 1838 as "The History of London" which had the same number of plates, so this may be a re-issue copy of the earlier book.A rare variant binding of scarlet, blocked cloth and a gothic design in gilt.

Contemporary half green calf, red marbled boards heightened in gilt, five raised bands with gilt-tooled panel decoration to backstrip, red and black morocco label strips with title information in gilt to backstrip, marbled endpapers. Joints and corners of boards have some slight rubbing, minor foxing to outer margins; otherwise very good. Bookplate of Thomas Lee Marshall to first pastedown. § First edition thus, with a "Life of Thomas Gray" by Rev. John Mitford. The Aldine Poet Series was a 20 year project that involved printing new editions of classic British poets from Chaucer through to the 19th Century. They were published in 53 volumes during the years 1830-1844. Pickering secured John Mitford and Alexander Dyce as editors with Sir Harris Nicolas, so that the series would be of a high standard.

Attractive piece of suffrage-themed sheet music, the lyrics told from the perspective of a father and his little boy, whose mother was absent due to her involvement in the women's rights movement. "A little lad with curly hair stood by his father's knee / Could see that he was crying he was sad as he could be / He sobbed and said "I feel so blue," as tears ran down his cheeks / "Oh father where is mother she has not been home for weeks" / His Pa said "Lad the tale is sad, She's down at Suffrage Hall / She's gone to fight for women's rights, why there's their bugle call." In comparison to the denigrating tone of other suffrage songs from the period, the chorus here conveys familial pride: "Hear the tramp of their feet - as they come down the street / Gee those girlies look sweet, They're all dressed up so neat / Your dear old ma just took a fighter's place / She likes the smell of powder 'cause it's always on her face / There's no rats in her hair - you can see she don't care / Holds her head in the air, Gee your mother's a bear / Tramp, Tramp, Tramp the girls are marching, Your Mother's gone away to join the army."
