Two related letters describing and confirming the Ruler of Wankaner (Maharana Raj Sahib Amarsinhji Banesinhji)'s support for Thomas Cook's new Expeditionary Force Supplies Service for France, Egypt and the Near East. Very good, pinned together, centre-folded, and 2-hole punched with no impact on the content. LETTER 1: 2pp, 21x26cm, signed typescript with the letterhead of Thomas Cook, Hornby Road, Bombay, dated 5 December 1939, and referenced "JW". This was sent by G(?) Brown to Mr Rao Bahadur Devchand I. Mehta, BA, Home Member, Wankaner State. Acting on behalf of Thomas Cook's Chairman, Brown is asking Mehta to inform "His Highness" of their new Expeditionary Force Supplies Service "which, it is felt, will have a special appeal to the principal Rulers of Indian States and other notabilities who are interested in the welfare of those who are serving with the Expeditionary Force in France and also those stationed in Egypt and the near East". He describes how the service will supply parcels to troops serving abroad, Prisoners of War and Internees at various rates. Thomas Cook has entered into agreements with manufacturers and wholesalers to supply a wide range of goods not included in standard Army rations including clothing, gramophones, other musical instruments and "innumerable other articles". Brown encourages the Ruling Princes to use the service to benefit their troops abroad, and to include best wishes and compliments cards in the parcels. He explains flexibility in distribution. He advises that Thomas Cook has been building up a stock of supplies in the face of growing restrictions, that special arrangements are being made for Christmas and the New Year, and that the scheme "will be a permanent one during the War, as it is the aim of the Company to maintain this unusual service throughout the hostilities, for the convenience of its clientele and as a practical service to those serving with the Colours". Brown refers to descriptive pamphlets that are not included here, and asks for His Highness' "early consideration to these proposals so that the requirements might be advised to London as soon as possible". // LETTER 2: (1)pp foolscap with Hindusthan Bond / Made in India watermark.
