Foreword by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. Glossary. Appendix A. Appendix B. Bibliography. Index. Neil Sagebiel is the founder and editor of Armchair Golf Blog, one of the top golf blogs on the Internet. He put down his baseball glove and picked up golf clubs at the age of 12, and played for his high school and college golf teams in California. A former copywriter for a Seattle advertising agency and major newspaper, he is a freelance writer. In 1969, the 42-year history of biennial golf matches between the United States and Great Britain reached its climax. The U.S., led by Jack Nicklaus, had dominated competitive golf for years; Great Britain, led by Tony Jacklin, was the undisputed underdog. But in spite of having lost 14 of 17 Ryder Cups in the past, the British entered the 1969 Ryder Cup as determined as the Americans were dominant. What followed was the most compelling, controversial, and contentious Ryder Cup the sport had ever seen. Draw in the Dunes is a story of personal and professional conflict, from the nervousness displayed at the very beginning of the Ryder Cup matches, when one man could not tee his golf ball, to the nerve displayed by Nicklaus and Jacklin, who battled each other all the way to the final moment of the final match. Throughout the Cup, 17 of the 32 matches were not decided until the final hole. Most electrifying was Nicklaus and Jacklin's contest, which decided the fate of the Ryder Cup. At the last putt, Nicklaus conceded to Jacklin, keeping the cup for the Americans while letting the British walk away with their most successful Ryder Cup result in years. From this event, which came to be known as "The Concession," Nicklaus and Jacklin forged a lifelong friendship and ushered in a new era of golf. From the author of the critically acclaimed golf history The Longest Shot, Draw in the Dunes is the gripping account of a legendary Cup competition, and the story of golf's greatest act of sportsmanship. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].

Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Nos. 1-9, all published. Octavos. Illustrated in black and white and tipped-in color plates. Printed wrappers. Modest general wear with a couple of tiny tears at the spine, most color plates neatly reattached, first two volumes with hinges neatly strengthened, Number 2 with a small foredge stain affecting the a small area of the margins of the second half of the text, and Number 1 with a bit of cover erasure and a bit of loss at the spine, a very good set. Text highlights include "The Night's Children" by Jean Genet (translated by Bernard Frechtman); "Japanese Goblin Poems" (translated by Lafcadio Hearn); "Forerunners of Modern Music" by John Cage; "Two Poems about Heaven and Earth" by Kenneth Patchen; "To Walter de la Mere" by T.S. Eliot; "The Gift of Understanding" and "The Landfall" by Thomas Merton; "The Furies" by Weldon Kees; "At the Edge of the Forest" by Raymond Queneau (translated by Ralph Manheim); and "Demolition Proejct" by William Stafford, among many others. In 2002 Yale's Beinecke Library organized an exhibition of Ruth and John Stephan's work, with an emphasis on *The Tiger's Eye*. Reviewing the exhibition and accompanying catalog for *The New York Times*, Roberta Smith wrote: "the magazine, which took its title from William Blake, was one of the few that 'took visual art as seriously as literature.' It was also an eccentric mom-and-pop operation, put together with love, sophistication and a fair amount of attitude, as well as Ruth's money. (Her family owned Walgreen's).'" A complete run of this important and nicely-produced mid-Century journal.
