Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Canadian Controversy: Its Origin, Nature, And Merits is a historical book written by Thomas Frederick Elliot in 1838. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the political, economic, and social tensions that led to the Canadian Rebellion of 1837-1838. Elliot explores the origins of…the conflict between the British colonial government and the French-speaking population of Lower Canada, as well as the grievances of the English-speaking population of Upper Canada. The book also examines the role of key figures such as Louis-Joseph Papineau and William Lyon Mackenzie in the rebellion, and the subsequent British military response. Elliot provides a detailed account of the events leading up to the rebellion, including the debates over responsible government and the role of the colonial assembly. The book also explores the aftermath of the rebellion, including the Durham Report and the Act of Union that merged Upper and Lower Canada into a single province. Overall, The Canadian Controversy is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Canada and its struggle for self-government.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

8vo. pp. 2 p.l., 84. disbound (light foxing). Second Edition. Elliot was Chief Clerk of the North American Division of the Colonial Office, 1833-37. "Under his direction the North American Department was run with a new sense of purpose. In 1835 he was appointed secretary of the commission headed by Lord Gosford that was to inqui…re into the political impasse in Lower Canada, and he went with it to Quebec. In effect, he became a fourth commissioner. His letters to Henry Taylor, another senior clerk in the Colonial Office, were circulated to the cabinet and on his return he published [this] pamphlet defending the government's policy in British North America." (DCB VIII p. xxxii). Elliot is mainly concerned with the period from 1828 to 1837. Appended is the text of Enclosure No. 2 in Lord Aberdeen's dispatch to Lord Amherst, dated April 2, 1835, "shewing in what manner the Recommendations of the Canada Committee of 1828 have been carried into execution by His Majesty's Government".
