Ward, Humphry [Thomas Humphry Ward 1845-1926] Sir Frederic George Kenyon GBE KCB TD FBA FSA (15 January 1863 - 23 August 1952) was a British palaeographer and biblical and classical scholar. He held a series of posts at the British Museum from 1889 to 1931. He was also the president of the British Academy from 1917 to 1921. From 1918 to 1952 he was Gentleman Usher of the Purple Rod.

Addressed at foot to 'E. F. Benson Esq.' Thirty-one lines of text. He begins by stating that Benson, in his 'work on Charlotte Brontë', has 'made a very correct st…udy of her'. After discussing a point about Branwell Bronte, he states: 'We cannot rely on Charlotte's assertion that he knew nothing whatever of their ventures in publishing. I am just busy preparing the "Life and Letters" for the Shakespeare Head edition, and have found from Charlotte's letters and other associated facts that she did not always tell the truth.' She describes the 'most glaring instance', concerning 'her references to Balzac's works', and adds that there are ' other instances of deceit in her correspondence with Ellen Nussey'. In the final paragraph he states that his 'old friend Mr. C. W. Hatfield [of the Bronte Society] will not hear a wrong word about Charlotte, and pleads with me to modify my editorial notes concerning the influence of Branwell, whilst my colleagues and editorial chief T. J. Wise is quite impartial, though he would like Charlotte's reputation upheld. In consequence of this I am venturing to send you the introductory portion (in rough galley form) of Chapter XIV in "Life and Letters" which I have headed "The Influence of Branwell." I wonder if you would be good enough to look this over and give me your opinion and criticism of it.'.

Ocean, July 25, 1878'; Croft's letter enquires about the offer by the State of Missouri of a $10,000 prize to anyone who can explain the cause of the 'Hog Cholera' (swine fever); Croft claims he is 'well acquainted with the cause, the preventive (sic), and the ease of that Disease, if taken in time. And although I am obliged to reside here on account of bad health - consumption - I am still able and would like to contend for that prize, if it is still open.'; the letter is complete, and signed in full at the foot by Thomas Croft; the letter paper with original fold lines, small ink stain to engraved illustration, verso with old paper adhesions to bottom margin of sheet. Thomas Croft was an amateur anthropologist with a deep interest in the culture of Easter Island (Rapanui), in particular its mysterious writing system known as rongorongo. Working independently of Bishop Jaussen, Croft made an unsuccessful attempt to decipher the script with the help of an unnamed informant in Papeete, and in 1873 he sent photographs of two rongorongo tablets to the California Academy of Sciences with an accompanying letter outlining his conclusions about the Rapanui writing system. (See Stephen R. Fischer. Rongorongo: The Easter Island Script : History, Traditions, Texts. Oxford : Clarendon Press, 1997, pp 58 ff). A fascinating document with an Easter Island connection.
