Eighty nine plates including both frontis, half leather, blindstamped with gilt decoration and lettering, marbled boards and endpapers, 203, 96 + "Analysis of Beauty". Covers worn, rubbed, soiled, shelfworn, corners and spine tips bumped and worn, leather scuffed, spine covers have several small cracks in the leather, inner hinges cracked, front cover loose on volume 1 and rear cover loose on volume 2, ink names, staining, soiling, scattered spotting, light creasing, one page lacking tip of corner in volume 1, volume 2 has tears, worming and a page that is almost detached, also in volume 2 plate VIII is mislabeled as plate VII. Except for the frontis, the plates are numbered I-LXXXIX with the plates being given a separate numbering system of Roman numerals within each "chapter." There is no plate LXXXIV but every "chapter" has all the plates called for so it appears to be another instance of misnumbering since our count of 89 plates matches that of The National Union Catalog. In spite of the above description it is still an attractive set. Sold as is. Second edition.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Aranei, or A Natural History of Spiders, including the principal Parts of the well known Work on English Spiders by Eleazar Albin, also The Whole of the Celebrated Publication on Swedish Spiders by Charle Clerk, Revised, Enlarged and Designed anew by Thomas Martyn, author of the Universal Conchologist, English Entomologist, &c. Oversized hardcover bound in full leather, likely the original 18th century binding. Blindstamped lettering and decoration on the spine. Gold border on the covers. Minor wear to edges and corners, but overall remarkably good condition. Marbled endpapers. Engraved bookplate on inside front cover with the name Sir John William Lubbock, Bart, and coat of arms with motto. Engraved title page dated 1793. Extraordinary frontispiece engraving, entirely hand colored so as to appear like a painting (which, I suppose, it is) with blue background, fully rendered leaves and grapes and branches, along with the spiders. Following title page, there are two full page engravings with tissue guards showing coins; they are dated 1788 and 1792. Curious binding error at the front, but all pages present. 4 page introduction paginated i - iv. then 4 numbered pages on Spiders (1-4) . then preface continues v-vii. and then pagination continues with page 5. Pagination continues to page 70. Then there are 11 engraved pages of hand-colored spiders. Following those 11 engravings, there is another engraved title page elaborately titled Figures of English Spiders, A Work Originally Given by Eleazar Albin, Revised and Designed anew by Thomas Martyn, MDCCXCIII [1793]. Then follows 31 numbered pages of detailed descriptions of the contents of 17 plates, and then there are 17 plates, all hand colored and all with tissue guards. In all, there are 28 hand colored plates of spiders (showing more than 150 species), 2 plates of coins, and frontispiece engraving. The book measures 11.5 x 13.5 inches. Binding is tight and secure. Pages clean. Hand coloring is especially nice; artist has not only colored the spiders, but has painted in shadows to give the appearance of mounted specimens instead of merely painted drawings. Original owner of the book John William Lubbock, presents a bit of a challenge, as there were three generations of Lubbocks all with the same name. Lubbock (2nd Baronet) lived 1774-1840, was a Banker. His son of the same name (3rd Baronet) lived 1803-1865, worked in the bank as well, but was also a scientist and friend and neighbor of Charles Darwin. His son (4th Baronet) (1834-1913) continued scientific studies and is credited with coining the terms Paleolithic and Neolithic. He, like his father, was a friend to Charles Darwin. It seems most likely that this book belonged to the 3rd Baronet originally. This copy (more recently) comes from the collection of Lincoln Brower and Linda Fink - noted Lepidopterists and academics, from their fine library in the Blue Ridge Mountains. At the moment, this is the only copy available in the United States. (coincidentally, the only other copy available (in the UK) belonged to EW Classey, a mentor of Fink & colleague of Brower's. Please email with questions or to request photos.
